I've read Martin Cruz Smith (given the first book by my grandfather of sainted memory) and Tony Hillerman and enjoyed them both for different reasons. Police methods in the Soviet Union (and later in Russia) and the Reservation. I found them very interesting.
I've read quite a few from both those lists. Been reading and enjoying Dick Francis since his first book - Nerve - showed up in a Reader's Digest Condensed Book when I was a young teen.
