If you found some interviews with Samuel L Jackson you'd see he isn't taking the movie very seriously. He just knows he's rich and can do whatever he wants.
He saw the screenplay for this movie and all he cared about was it was called Snakes On A Plane. He approached them saying he wanted to make this movie. Without him, it probably would never have been made. I think because Jackson's name brought some "prestige" to the movie they wanted to call it Flight 102 or some crap like that but the only reason Jackson is making the movie is because he KNOWS it's horrible and the name says it all. He told them he would drop out of the movie if they changed the name, so they didn't! haha
