A/N: This is just a filler, to describe RyeoWook and kyuHyun's relationship a bit more. I think there'll be 13 or 14 chapters in this fic... So I'm a bit more than halfway done.
The next few days saw RyeoWook struggling to keep up in the world he had forgotten, rushing from class to class, sometimes arriving late because he couldn’t remember how to get there. KyuHyun and YeSung helped him out whenever they were around, but more often than he’d have liked, RyeoWook was left to his own devices. Thankfully, the teachers kept to their word and left him alone most of the time.
SungMin also was surprisingly helpful. After hearing from KyuHyun that RyeoWook had lost his memories, he had approached the smaller boy in the corridor. “Hi, my name is SungMin,” He said cheerfully. “I hope we can be friends.” SungMin was very kind to him, always cheerful and bubbly no matter the circumstances.
RyeoWook’s opinion of him changed though, when one day while they were eating lunch under the boy’s favorite tree, KyuHyun approached them with a smile. When RyeoWook noticed how KyuHyun’s eyes automatically went straight to SungMin first, he felt a surge of jealousy from inside him. Why did KyuHyun look at SungMin like that? SungMin’s eyes lit up, and he seemed to become even happier, if that was possible. RyeoWook found himself resenting the other boy. But why? SungMin hadn’t done anything to him… He just didn’t understand himself anymore.
He could only hope he’d remember just who he was, and what happened to make him like this… And soon.

KyuHyun lay awake in bed that night, unable to fall asleep. The way RyeoWook had been acting recently had been worrying him. He’d been perfectly fine up until lunch, and then after that he went really quiet, only speaking when spoken to and sometimes not even then. Even when they got home, RyeoWook had only went straight into his room to work on homework.
Was RyeoWook mad at him? Why? Had he done something to upset the older boy? Concerned, KyuHyun got up and walked to RyeoWook’s room. He peeked inside, eyes scanning the darkness for his friend.
RyeoWook was fast asleep, curled up in a tight ball on his bed. His breathing was steady and quiet, his blankets kicked off the bottom of the bed as usual. Smiling to himself, KyuHyun walked into the room and picked up the discarded blankets. Seeing RyeoWook was shivering slightly, he covered the small boy again, tucking in the edges of the blankets. RyeoWook looked so cute and innocent when sleeping…
KyuHyun stayed there for a long while, just watching his best friend sleep, and think. He’d first met RyeoWook when they were five. He remembered how much he’d used to take the boy’s presence for granted, and smiled sadly.
***flashback***
A young five year old boy sobbed quietly under a large tree, hands curled into fists and wiping at his eyes frantically. For each tear he wiped away, three more took its place. Young KyuHyun had heard hi parents arguing again, and the word ‘divorce’ made its way into the conversation. That word is not one that a five-year-old boy should ever have to hear. Not understanding the meaning, he had gone to his favorite aunt, who had explained to him without knowing why he was asking that divorce was when two adults decided they didn’t like each other anymore, and moved away.
Sso here he was, crying alone, having figured out that his mother and father wouldn’t be together for much longer. He didn’t have any friends to go to, so he simply went to the largest tree in the park, and sat there.
“Why are you crying?” Asked a small voice nearby. KyuHyun jumped and looked around; there was no one in sight. “Are you hurt?” Asked the voice again.
Was it the TREE talking? KyuHyun looked up at where the voice had been coming from, and saw a small figure nestled in the branches. The boy was much smaller than him, and rather looked like a girl. The boy jumped down next to him, curiousity and concern in his eyes. “Where are you hurt?” He asked.
“I’m not hurt,” KyuHyun muttered, wiping his eyes angrily. Much good that did. “I’m sad.”
“Why?” Asked the boy, sitting down beside him. KyuHyun didn’t respond. His quiet time had been interrupted, and he wasn’t feeling too kindly towards any questions right now.
“You know, my Mommy always said things hurt less if you talk about it,” The boy supplied, sounding way too knowledgeable for someone his age. He must have been around KyuHyun’s age. “Don’t you want to talk?”
After a few minutes of pestering, KyuHyun finally gave in, and told the other boy why he was crying. The tears returned, but the other boy wasn’t mean about it like many other little boys KyuHyun knew. Instead, he offered a sympathy KyuHyun had never seen before, and hugged KyuHyun when the boy was done talking. “See, feel better?” He asked with a bright, toothy grin. And KyuHyun had to admit, that yes, he did feel better.
***End Flashback***
From that day on, whenever he was upset about something, he’d always return to that same tree. The little boy was always there, willing to lend an ear, and offer a hug when KyuHyun was done. Absently KyuHyun would wonder of the other ever went home, but he dismissed the thought. Though while the small boy was interested in anything KyuHyun had to say, the opposite didn’t exactly hold true. KyuHyun never tried to find anything out about the boy, nor was any information offered.
In fact, KyuHyun only found out the boy’s name three months after his parents divorced. His father invited some of his new business partners over, and when they arrived told KyuHyun to come meet them. “They have a son, a year older then you,” His father said. “Why don’t you come say hi to him?”
When the door opened, KyuHyun found himself looking into the eyes to the ‘tree-boy’, as he had come to call his new friend. “KyuHyun, this is Kim RyeoWook.” The smaller boy, RyeoWook, smiled shyly.
Their parents went from business partners to friends. As a consequence, RyeoWook and KyuHyun saw each other more often than before. The two became very good friends, but it had always seemed like a one-sided relationship. KyuHyun wasn’t very interested in finding anything out about RyeoWook, while RyeoWook at this point knew nearly everything about him.
RyeoWook was the kind of boy that always looked on the bright side, and hardly ever showed any negative emotion. KyuHyun had always thought the boy was dumb or ignorant, but a year after they had first met, this idea completely left him.
He’d known RyeoWook had a younger sister, a little girl named SooYoung. She was always ill whenever KyuHyun came over, though he never asked why. People caught colds all the time, right?
One day, he went to their special tree as always, only to discover to his shock that RyeoWook wasn’t hiding in the branches like usual, but curled up on the ground below it. For a panicked moment KyuHyun thought the boy had fallen and injured himself, but as he ran over and saw the tears running down the boy’s small, angelic face, he felt a very different kind of fear.
This was the very first time the tables were turned, and it was KyuHyun’s turn to take the other boy into his arms and wipe away his tears. RyeoWook didn’t make any noise when he cried, no sobbing or anything. But the tears and lonely look in his eyes was enough to crush KyuHyun’s heart more than his own troubles and problems had. “What’s wrong?” He asked. The first time he’d ever asked RyeoWook anything other than his opinion.
SooYoung had died. RyeoWook revealed that her sickness had been a terminal type of lung disease, and the doctors had been unable to find a cure. For the first time KyuHyun saw the pain that RyeoWook had hidden from the world, at such a young age. It wasn’t that RyeoWook was ignorant or dumb; it was that he kept everything inside so he wouldn’t bother others.
That day, KyuHyun promised himself that RyeoWook would never cry again. It was just too sad, to see someone so cheerful, innocent and carefree crying tears of despair.
He wormed his way into RyeoWook’s life. Though the smaller boy wasn’t as eager to give up information about himself as KyuHyun had been, KyuHyun didn’t give up. He found out RyeoWook’s fear of needles, his need to make sure that everyone around him was okay without caring about himself, his insistence to never cross the street without waiting for their green light, even when there were no cars around.
He also began to see that RyeoWook’s smiles were fake. His laughing, all fake. The pain in the boy’s eyes gave his real feelings away. KyuHyun became determined to see the boy’s real smile. So he made sure to find out when RyeoWook was sad, and find out why. He took examples from those countless times RyeoWook had been there to comfort him, and tried to help his new best friend whenever he could.
When they were ten, KyuHyun was finally rewarded. They had been walking home from the park, soaked through with rain, when RyeoWook had found a small kitten. KyuHyun agreed to help him look after her, and RyeoWook had smiled, and laughed. The laugh had been so care-free, so bright that for a moment KyuHyun thought RyeoWook must really be an angel. What else could produce such an uplifting sound?
Seeing that small face completely free of hidden pain and fake smiles for the first time in the five years they’d known each other, KyuHyun felt that, for that moment, he could fly.
Time passed, and they always stayed together. RyeoWook remained by KyuHyun’s side, with a bright REAL smile, and hugs and advice when he needed it. And he needed it more and more often.
In their third year of highschool, KyuHyun first saw their new transfer student, a boy named Lee SungMin. He had been instantly awestruck. Feeling a strange feeling inside him, he immediantly went to RyeoWook. RyeoWook always had answers for everything.
Once KyuHyun was done describing his problem, and the weird feeling, RyeoWook had smiled and patted his arm. “Sounds like you’re in love.”
Love? KyuHyun began to watch SungMin more and more, and sure enough, he came to the same conclusion RyeoWook had. He was in love with SungMin. But the boy never looked at him, never spoke to him, and KyuHyun didn’t have the courage to randomly approach him and talk to him. So he always went to RyeoWook, the only person who knew about his hopeless crush on SungMin. He knew loving another guy was wrong, and yet he couldn’t help it. He asked RyeoWook if it was dirty love, since they were both guys.
“No,” RyeoWook had said, shaking his head. “Nothing’s wrong with it. I like guys too.”
KyuHyun had teased him then, saying that since he was practically a girl himself, he could no qualms about liking guys. RyeoWook had pouted cutely and shoved KyuHyun away, not talking to him the rest of the day as punishment.
Somewhere along the way, things changed between them. KyuHyun spent more time looking after SungMin and talking about him than having fun with RyeoWook. RyeoWook started disappearing, going to his special tree in the park, and KyuHyun wouldn’t follow him anymore. He didn’t think much about it, the change happened too slowly from him to notice, as he failed to notice the frown that appeared on RyeoWook’s face whenever he started watching SungMin again.
He did notice though, when that fake smile appeared again. He had just finished showering during the first week that they’d shared an apartment, and left the bathroom to find RyeoWook in his room, staring blankly at the wall. When he noticed KyuHyun watching, he jumped a bit, then smiled at him. “Hello,” He said cheerfully. His smile was a bit off. It didn’t reach his eyes anymore.
KyuHyun told himself not to think much of it; maybe RyeoWook had jut had an off day? But it unnerved him a bit, as the last time he’d seen that fake smile had been when they were ten. But as summer vacation ended and school started, he continued his admiration of SungMin at a distance, and failed to see that fake smile RyeoWook suddenly wore so often.
Thinking back on it, all the signs had been there; the fake smiling, the frowning when KyuHyun mentioned SungMin’s name, the blushing whenever RyeoWook happened to walk in on KyuHyun changing. It had all been there, but because he’d been too busy focusing on SungMin, KyuHyun had never seen a thing. And the time RyeoWook had needed him the most, even more than when SooYoung had died, he had pushed the smaller boy away.
Rreaching down, KyuHyun brushed a stray lock of hair out of RyeoWook’s eyes and tucked it behind his ear. Would RyeoWook hate him when he regained his memories? KyuHyun needed to figure out what to do, and quick; the memories could come back any day.
He remained there for a few minutes longer, simply watching his friend sleep. Then he left for his own room, lying down again. If he couldn’t sleep before, he definitely couldn’t now. What was he going to do?
