SungMin walked with KyuHyun back to his apartment, the younger boy still in a state of shock. SungMin watched him to make sure he didn’t run into anything, worried. What had all that been about? RyeoWook’s reaction had puzzled him, and how KyuHyun seemed to fall apart right after confused him even more. He was missing something here, he could feel it.

When KyuHyun unlocked the door to let them in, SungMin slipped past him and went straight to the kitchen. “I’ll make you some herbal tea,” He said softly, looking worriedly at KyuHyun who went straight to RyeoWook’s room, hoping to find the boy there. But he wasn’t.

Sitting on the counter while waiting for the tea to steep, SungMin frowned a bit and thought. RyeoWook and KyuHyun were best friends. RyeoWook lost his memories in an accident, and whenever he was on the verge of remembering something he always seemed to be in pain. SungMin was pretty sure he hadn’t imagined the looks of jealousy and hurt RyeoWook had sported whenever SungMin came over.

Was it possible…?

He brought the tea to KyuHyun, who was sitting in the living room, holding his cell phone in his hands. Peering over one shoulder, SungMin noted that there was a ‘one missed call’ icon at the top of the screen. When KyuHyun checked his missed alert, RyeoWook’s number and name came up, along with a picture of the boy, smiling brightly at the camera.

“It’s fake,” KyuHyun whispered.

“Pardon?” SungMin asked, sitting down beside him.

“His smile… Even here, his smile was fake.” He gazed down at the picture, then closed his cell, holding his head in his hands. “How blind have I been?” He said softly, voice breaking. “How stupid…”

SungMin was alarmed to see tears slipping down the boys cheeks. Reaching over to wipe them away, he felt hurt when KyuHyun flinched a bit. But it confirmed his suspicions.

“KyuHyun… Tell me exactly what happened,” SungMin said softly. “I can’t help you if you don’t. RyeoWook… Was he in love with you?”

It took fifteen minutes to track RyeoWook down. By the time YeSung caught up to his cousin, the boy was back at the park, sitting underneath the tree he had always been hiding in as a child. He had his legs curled up to his chest, forehead resting on his knees and arms wrapping around his body. Silent crying shook his small frame.

“RyeoWook ah… It’s me,” YeSung said softly as he approached, not wanting to spook the boy. Sitting down beside him, he wrapped his arms around RyeoWook, holding him close. “Wookie… I’m sorry,” He whispered. “I’m sorry you ended up seeing that.”

RyeoWook cried harder, still not making a sound, turning his body slightly so he could curl up against YeSung’s chest. YeSung didn’t say a word about the boy wetting his shirt, stroking RyeoWook’s hair gently. He hummed a soft song under his breath, trying to calm RyeoWook down.

Eventually RyeoWook stopped crying, just sitting there leaning against YeSung’s body. YeSung looked down at him, to see the boy’s eyes duller than ever, a lost and heartbroken look in them. He felt a surge of anger towards Kyuhyun. How could he do that to his boyfriend? Okay, he was also mad because it had been SungMin he kissed, but that was beside the point!

And he was also a bit mad at himself. If he had told SungMin sooner of RyeoWook’s feelings, SungMin would have never went to confess. How was he to know SungMin would actually get out of bed to find KyuHyun at this time of night? But still, he felt partially responsible for this.

“YeSung hyung?” RyeoWook asked softly, voice hollow. YeSung looked down at him, meeting the boys hopeless eyes. “Can I stay at your apartment tonight?” He asked softly.

YeSung nodded. He didn’t want RyeoWook to go back to where that bastard was either. “Of course.” He kissed RyeoWook lightly on the forehead. “Let’s go, okay? Before you catch sick.” He helped RyeoWook to his feet, guiding him out of the park.

“…” SungMin was silent for a while after kyuHyun finished explaining. Then he chuckled softly, shaking his head. “If I had known that you two were together, I definitely wouldn’t have come after you like that,” He said, but there was a tremble in his voice. He was trying not to think too hard, firmly in denial, but when it came down to it, he knew what had to be done. “I feel like I’m the bad guy, ruining a perfect couple.”

“No, you’re not the bad guy,” KyuHyun whispered. “I am. RyeoWook had always been there for him, and I managed to completely crush him not once, but twice. I don’t deserve either of you.” He continued watching his cell phone, nestled in his hands, hoping beyond hope that RyeoWook would call.

SungMin tapped one foot thoughtfully. “I don’t see you as a bad guy… Just very confused. You’re going to have to make up your mind soon. Why don’t you call YeSung? RyeoWook’s probably with him.”

KyuHyun nodded, then jumped as his cell vibrated. Thinking it was a call, he flipped it open, but it was just a reminder. Scanning the two words that appeared on the screen, a sad smile appeared on his lips. “I had forgotten… It’s RyeoWook’s birthday tomorrow.”

SungMin groaned softly. “What a great time for all this to happen.”

“It’s not just that.” KyuHyun closed his cell again. “It was on RyeoWook’s birthday, years ago, that his little sister SooYoung passed away. That was the very first time I’d seen him cry. I promised myself I’d make sure he never cried again. But he has, because of me.” He bit his lower lip slightly. “I’m going to call YeSung.” He had to talk to RyeoWook. He didn’t want his best friend to be alone on such an important and sad day on top of everything else, left with only memories of his sisters death for company.

SungMin was silent as KyuHyun dialed in YeSung’s number, holding the phone to his ear.

“Hello?” Came YeSung’s voice from the other end of the phone. KyuHyun took a small breath.

“YeSung, it’s KyuHyun. Is RyeoWook there?”

“Why?” YeSung asked, sounding guarded and more than a bit angry. He had every right to be.

“I need to talk to him. Please, I know he’s with you.”

“Why should I let you talk to him?” YeSung demanded. “So you can break his heart a third time?”

“YeSung, I-“ There was beeping from the other end of the phone. YeSung had hung up. KyuHyun closed his cell, silent. SungMin frowned. “That’s not good… What are you going to do?”

“I don’t know,” KyuHyun said softly, one hand over his eyes. “I… I just don’t know anymore.”

YeSung returned to sitting beside RyeoWook on the couch, the smaller boy curled up and arms wrapped around himself. YeSung rubbed his arm soothingly. “You sure you don’t want to talk to him?” He asked gently.

RyeoWook shook his head. “I… I can’t.” He was close to tears still, voice breaking. He didn’t think he could face KyuHyun ever again. Kyuhyun had been lying when he said that he loved him. KyuHyun had NEVER lied to him before.

YeSung watched over him worriedly. The hours ticked by, and just before midnight RyeoWook fell asleep finally, curled up against YeSung’s side. YeSung glanced at the clock and sighed softly. “Not exactly the best birthday present ever, hm?” He murmured to the sleeping boy. He got up and found some extra blankets, covering RyeoWook gently, then went to stand by the window, unable to sleep, watching the clouds overhead blot out the stars.
