DongHae separated himself from HyukJae shakily, walking over to the door. HyukJae followed him, wary. The door swung open, and DongHae drew in a shaky breath. “JungHoon hyung…”
HyukJae could see the others eyes look over DongHae’s body, noting the puffy eyes and slight trembling. He could see the concern bright in the others eyes. The older man pulled DongHae into a hug. “Don’t worry Hae. You’ll be fine from now on,” He said firmly. DongHae sniffed a little, looking up at him. “I’m going to take you back home.”
“No, you can’t!” HyukJae wasn’t about to let DongHae leave, not without a fight. He stepped forward, and JungHoon looked at him with a frown. “Who are you?”
“I’m his best friend,” HyukJae snapped. “And you can’t take him away, not against his will.”
“But Hyukkie,” DongHae whispered. “I want to go back home.”
HyukJae ignored the tightening in his throat. “You don’t mean that, Hae. You’re exhausted, and you just had a long day. But think of everyone else. We’re Super Junior, Hae. We’re a family. And we’re all here for you, no matter what. Remember the performance last night? There’s not just sad memories here. There’s happy ones too. Do you really want to throw them away?”
DongHae looked back at HyukJae, standing so close to him. He had his attention. HyukJae took a deep breath. This was it, the words that would either convince DongHae to stay, or push him away for good. But with JungHoon standing there, holding Hae so protectively, the rapper knew he had no choice. He had to say this; it was the only think that had the slightest chance of keeping Hae here.
“DongHae ah… I’m in love with you. I have been for a while.” He swallowed, looking down at the ground. He didn’t want to see what emotion was in his best friends eyes. “I know you… Are still in love with SiWon. And you’re still hurting over KiBum too. But…” He bit his lower lip. “We need you here, Hae. I need you here. Our family isn’t complete without you; you’re the missing piece of the puzzle. If you go… Super Junior won’t ever be the same.” A pause. “And neither will I.”
There was a moment of uncomfortable silence, in which Hyukjae kept his gaze on the ground, too nervous to look up. Half a minute passed, with none of them saying anything. Then he felt cool fingers slip under his chin, lifting his face up to look at DongHae.
The boy’s expression was a mix of a bunch of things. Pain, uncertainty, confusion. But there was also curiosity, and hope. “I… I don’t know, Hyukkie,” DongHae whispered softly. “I don’t know what to do.” He was so confused. Could he bear it if he was hurt again? But the love he saw in the other boys eyes was calming, reassuring.
HyukJae reached up and gently held the hand that was pressed to his chin. “Trust me,” He replied softly, meeting DongHae’s eyes. “You can trust me, Hae.”
DongHae bit his lower lip. “What if I fall?”
“Then I’ll catch you,” HyukJae said firmly, without hesitation. JungHoon looked from one to the other, feeling DongHae slowly move out of his embrace. “Hae?” He asked softly. “What’s your decision?”
DongHae looked up at his worried cousin, then at the boy who had just confessed. HyukJae had always been there for him. Like RyeoWook had been there for KyuHyun, and YeSung had been there for SungMin. It was a tradition carried on, of best friends looking after the people they cared about most in the world, waiting for the right moment to make themselves known. But did HyukJae mean his words as much as the other two had? DongHae looked back to his best friend, and could see the answer written in his eyes.
And he made his decision.
*****Five Year Later***
“SUPER JUNIOR!”
The music stopped, everyone holding the final pose as the audience cheered, so loud it was deafening. The lights went off, and the curtains closed. As the backstage lights turned back on, the thirteen males turned and looked at each other, breathing heavily and exhausted, and grinned.
SungMin let out a shout of “We did it!” before colliding with YeSung. The older boy wasn’t prepared for that no matter how many times SungMin jumped on him, and they fell to the ground in a tangle of limbs. KiBum and KanKyung smiled at each other tiredly, going to sit in the corner. KyuHyun and RyeoWook vanished instantly, gone before the lights were even fully on. ShinDong talked with LeeTeuk and KangIn, as SiWon and HeeChul left the stage gradually.
DongHae collided hard with EunHyuk’s back, in an effort to take him down like SungMin had to YeSung, but EunHyuk was used to the sneak attacks and kept his balance, pulling the laughing boy into his arms. “I think that was our best song yet,” The rapper noted. Since university, they’d all left their original jobs and worked on the Super Junior project, performing at small bars and nightclubs. They still had to keep part-time jobs on the side, since it didn’t pay that well, but they were content.
DongHae nodded enthusiastically, resting his cheek against the boys chest. Then he noticed a figure hanging back in the shadows. “Henli!” He called. “Good job!”
The Canadian boy left the darkness, smiling hesitantly. “Thank you hyung,” He said in awkward Korean. It was his debut with Super Junior, and the audience had loved it. He looked over the people remaining on the stage, blinking several times when he noticed SungMin and YeSung in the middle of a make-out session. His puffy cheeks flushed lightly, and he shook his head, walking off stage. KiBum swore that he could hear the boy mutter to himself in English, “Is everyone here gay?”
“LeeTeuk! LeeTeuk!” Another boy came running in, out of breath and clutching a letter in his hands. LeeTeuk looked over at him and smiled at their newest addition to the group. “JooMyuk,” he said with a smile. “What’s the rush?”
JooMyuk, or ZhouMi as most of them called him, stood up straight again with a foxy grin on his face. He had yet to debut with them, and there was some controversy with whether or not he and Henry were really a part of Super Junior, but they were both accepted by the members without complaint.
“A letter,” He said, waving the piece of paper. “And you’ll never guess who sent it. You know SM Entertainment?”
EunHyuk’s jaw dropped. “Wait, what? SM Entertainment? As in Star Museum Entertainment?”
“Yeah! Apparently Lee SooMan saw one of your performances, and he-“
“LEE SOOMAN?!?”
“Yes, and he wants to sign a contract with us! To be under his label!”
DongHae felt faint. “You mean we can be REAL singers and dancers?” ZhouMi nodded, and DongHae gave a whoop, glomping EunHyuk and sending them both crashing to the ground. YeSung and SungMin left running to tell the others the good news.
Soon they were all gathered again. ZhouMi eyed Henry with a mischievous grin, the Canadian shivering and moving to stand at the opposite end of the circle. As LeeTeuk read over the letter again and again, their stunned silence was punctured by cheers and yells as it finally dawned on the surprised singers what this meant. This was what they’d been aiming for. KiBum and HanKyung smiled at each other, no words exchanged but their eyes said enough. HeeChul yelled in SiWons ear, but the taller male didn’t seem to really mind. KyuHyun span RyeoWook around, and SungMin asked YeSung to do the same to him, giving him the best puppy-eyes he could manage, which was more than enough to work on his boyfriend. LeeTeuk leaned against KangIn, a little overwhelmed, the younger slipping one arm around the leaders’ waist.
“Hyukkie~” DongHae poked the older male, and EunHyuk looked back at him. “Hm?”
“Thank you.”
EunHyuk blinked, not quite sure what his boyfriend was going on about, but deciding to follow along anyways. “Um… Your welcome?”
DongHae laughed, then noticed a girl walking by. “TaeYeon nuna! Did you hear?” He called. The girl looked back at him and smiled. After graduating at the top of her program, she’d turned down a higher paying job to work as Super Juniors personal photographer. “Yup, congratulations! I’ll make sure word gets around, and we’ll have a huge party to celebrate!”
“Now you’re talking my language,” HeeChul said, dragging SiWon and TaeYeon away to discuss the upcoming party.
ZhouMi popped up behind Henry. “Are you going to be at the party then?”
Henry jumped. “Um… I-I guess so…?” Obviously nervous around the older male.
“Great! Let’s prepare something to show off to the others. Don’t you want your own solo?” He dragged Henry off.
DongHae and EunHyuk wandered over to the curtains, the former peeking out and seeing the crowd still gathered around the stage, cheering. He smiled and looked back at EunHyuk. “HyukJae… Do you think we’ll really make it?”
“Definitely,” EunHyuk said firmly. The future was still uncertain, and definitely filled with trouble, but as long as they were together, them and their family, they could get through anything. That much was certain.
“I’ll have to invite JungHoon hyung to the party,” DongHae chirped. “And MinHo and TaeMin and YoungSaeng and KyuJong and-“ EunHyuk laughed and shut him up with a kiss.

TILL DEATH DO WE PART SPOILER
The first thing he saw when he opened his eyes was smoke. Smoke everywhere. Coughing, he looked around for the source as he stood up. He felt funny; a light tingling running through his body. Looking around he saw tons of police cars, and ambulances, sirens going ful-blast. The smoke was from one of the stores nearby, fire roaring inside and people ran out of it screaming. Gunshots rang out, a cluster of gang members in a tussle with the police.
It was the kind of thing you heard about in the news every week or so. This area of town was famous for gang fights, but he came here often with his friends to play in the arcades. There must be a gang fight right now. Or there was a gang fight, the police seem to be just rounding up the few resistors now. This had gone a bit far though. Setting a shop on fire? He felt bad for the people inside the building.
“DongHae! DongHae!”
The sound of his name made the boy look around. Nearby, there were three figures on the side of the road next to a motorbike that had fallen over onto its side. Walking over, he recognized the two kneeling. His cousin SungMin, practically screaming at the one on the ground. His best friend Eunhyuk, rocking back and forth and whispering, “This can’t be real, this can’t be happening’, repeating it over and over like a broken record.
“DongHae, please!” SungMin pleaded, shaking the third boy by the shoulders. “Um, hello? I’m over here?” DongHae replied, confused. He walked closer and repeated himself, but neither SungMin nor EunHyuk heard him. Stopping beside them, he looked down at the only one who hadn’t spoken.
His first thought was that the guy looked terrible. There was soot all over his face, scraps and scratches on his cheeks and arms. He was lying perfectly still, skin pale and eyes closed. DongHae’s gaze was drawn downward, and he shivered when he saw the red staining the boys shirt. It came from a hole in the cloth and skin, thick crimson liquid seeping from it to form a puddle on the ground. He looked up at the others face again, frowning.
It took him five seconds to realize he was looking at himself.
And another five seconds to realize he wasn’t breathing.
