Summary: RyeoWook and KyuHyun have been best friends all their lives. KyuHyun has a long-suffering crush on their classmate, SungMin, but never confessed, only telling RyeoWook. Unfortunately, RyeoWook is deeply in love with KyuHyun, and suffers under the knowledge that he'll forever be 'best friend only'. Secrets start to come out, and both their lives will literally turn upside-down.
“KyuHyun ah, you’re going to be late for school! Wake up!”
No response. RyeoWook frowned at his roommate and best friend. “Wake up!” He tried again. Nothing; the other boy was out cold. Well, it wasn’t his fault that KyuHyun had stayed up late last night watching movies. But now they were both going to be late, because the silly boy slept right through his alarm clock blasting in his ears.
Seeing no other way, he yanked the covers off KyuHyun and proceeded to tickle the younger boy. If KyuHyun had been asleep before, he wasn’t now. He burst out in laughter, squirming a bit as he tried to get away from the smaller boy’s hands, and fell off the other end of the bed. RyeoWook laughed at the sight of KyuHyun’s feet dangling in the air. “Wookie, that was mean,” Came the deep voice, muffled a bit.
“You weren’t waking up, there was no other choice,” RyeoWook pouted lightly, shoving KyuHyun’s feet off the bed, the only part of him that had managed to stay up. “Hurry, school starts soon, and you haven’t eaten or dressed or anything.”
KyuHyun glanced at the clock from his position on the ground, then scrambled to his feet. “Why didn’t the alarm go off?” He complained, rushing to his closet and pulling out the first school uniform he saw. “It did,” RyeoWook put in. “You must have been really tired, normally you’re the one waking me up.”
“I stayed up late last night. I’ll be done in a minute.” He pulled his pyjama top over his head, tossing it onto the coverless bed. RyeoWook blushed and turned away at the sight of his best friends bare chest. “What’s the matter, we’re both guys,” KyuHyun said, raisng an eyebrow before pulling on his school top.
“Y-yeah… I’ll go get ready too…” RyeoWook stepped out of the room quickly, hiding his bright red cheeks. He scurried into his room, leaning against the wall with a sigh as he closed his eyes. Acting like a shy schoolgirl in front of him… Way to go, he congratulated himself sarcastically in his mind. That wasn’t obvious at all.
RyeoWook and KyuHyun had been best friends since they were five. Their parents knew each other, so they hung out a lot. They were always together; practically joined at the hip. So when they had gotten the idea to move out of their homes and be roommates for university, their families had no problem with it.
But RyeoWook hid something from KyuHyun. KyuHyun knew that RyeoWook liked guys; the opposite also held true. But what KyuHyun didn’t know was that RyeoWook had a long-standing crush on his best friend. The signs had always been there, but RyeoWook himself only realized it when he ccidentally walked in on KyuHyun showering their first week of being roommates. KyuHyun hadn’t noticed, and the smaller boy had been able to slip out unnoticed, but it was then that it struck RyeWook why he was having all these reactions to KyuHyun all the time. He was in love.
But this wasn’t good to know. KyuHyun was in love with someone else, a boy in their class named SungMin. He had loved him ever since high school, and it had gotten into something of a near-obsession. But KyuHyun had never said anything to SungMin, too fearful of being rejected. He talked to RyeoWook instead, confiding everything in his best friend. Everything he loved about SungMin, what his schedule was, how he had the cutest smile he’d ever seen… RyeoWook had heard it all. He was always there for KyuHyun when he was suffering another bout of depression from not confessing; he was there no matter what. But whenever KyuHyun got that glossy look in his eyes, and would start rambling about something SungMin had or does, RyeoWook would feel jealous, and hurt, and think to himself how much he wanted KyuHyun to feel that way about him. KyuHyun was absolutely devoted; but to the wrong person.
“RyeoWook, where did you go?” KyuHyun called. RyeoWook pressed one hand to his cheek to make sure it wasn’t hot, then pulled on a smile and poked his head out of his room. “Coming,” He called, grabbing his bag then following KyuHyun to the front door of his apartment. As usual, KyuHyun looked stunning in the school uniform; even the slight messiness of his hair after just waking up was nothing short of hot. RyeoWook felt himself burning up again, shaking his head to clear it as he slipped out the door after KyuHyun, locking it behind them.
They took the bus to the university as usual. It was crowded, RyeWook and KyuHyun pressed close together by the large amount of people. Thank goodness there was a height difference; KyuHyun didn’t notice his bright red face.
Walking in through the university gates, KyuHyun suddenly came to a full stop, and RyeoWook bumped into him. Knowing just who made KyuHyun freeze like that, RyeoWook poked his head out from behind the taller boy and looked around.
Sure enough, SungMin was sitting under a tree a little while away, beside an older boy going over some papers in his lap. RyeoWook recognized his cousin, YeSung, who was SungMin’s math tutor. KyuHyun had pestered RyeoWook on multiple occasions to ask YeSung to bring up his name a couple times to SungMin, but YeSung and RyeoWook weren’t that close despite being cousins, so they didn’t talk much. Going up to him out of the blue would be too strange.
“Keep walking,” RyeoWook suggested, feeling the familiar tightening in his chest. It was a feeling he had learnt to live with, but it didn’t make it hurt any less. KyuHyun obeyed, trying not to be obvious as he snuck glances at the two sitting under the tree. SungMin didn’t even look up, concentrating on what YeSung was teaching him.
“Do you think if I studied Math harder I could tutor him instead?” KyuHyun asked as they walked inside the building. RyeoWook shrugged. “I wouldn’t know. YeSung’s been SungMin’s tutor for a year though, you might not be able to.” He tried not to look at the disappointed look on KyuHyun’s face.
“Do I have any chance at all?” The taller boy asked gloomily.
RyeoWook closed his eyes, wishing he could get up the courage to tell KyuHyun that he loved him. Wishing that he had a chance at KyuHyun’s heart too. But he opened his eyes and put on his fake smile as always. “Of course KyuHyunnie ah. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” He patted the other’s shoulder lightly. “No matter the outcome, I’ll always be here for you.”
KyuHyun smiled down at him, a smile that could make the boy’s heart melt. “Thanks Wookie. You’re a great friend.” He gave him a half-hug, then continued walking. RyeoWook remained where he was for a moment to blink back the tears before following.
I know I’m a great friend, he thought sadly. I also know… That’s all I’ll ever be.
