Okay, now this may sound ignorant, but I have a question: How come half the teenagers you meet nowadays are no longer sad, or lonely, or depressed- they're emo? It seems to be a nice little way to label oneself as angsty and self-depricating. I know a lot of people consider it a "style"... but this style seems to be centred around being emotional ( Read more... )

Oh man thank you leah!!! Take it from someone whos been to a few concerts...and well...warped tour in general being or not being "emo" is some huge deal. Your very right, emo does stand for "emotional" and don't all human beings have emotions? Whether some ppl show a happier or angrier side...its an emotion.
But I guess now a days its cool to be dark...I have no idea why. It's like if you wear certain type of clothing, and have dark rim glasses, your this dark, depressed "emo" kid who locks themselves away from the world.
Thanks for bringing this topic up

Exactly! Hah, I was talking to Mariel and she said something along the lines of it being nice to have a guy who's pensive, but it's kind of annoying to ask one to go out and for him to be like "No,, I have to sit in the corner and think about fate." It was funny.

Hey, I love emo music, and I hate it when people are openly flabbergasted about it. Like this guy, who could hardly believe that I knew that there was a band named Norma Jean, in this case it because I do not dress in the emo fashion.

I'm sorry, but wearing black (if you're not in mourning) does not show depth. If anything, it is a colour cop-out! Like you said, emotions are internal, and negative emotions aren't the only ones people experience.

I'm sorry if some people are legitimately (medically) depressed, but there must be moments of light, non?

PS people that love classical music don't usually walk around in big white curly wigs speaking latin

LMAO!!!
OMFG!!! I had to refrain from screaming with laughter because my roomie is sleeping. The classical music comment...oh man jess...QUALITY!!

It's so true though, just because you like a certain type of music doesn't mean you have to look a certain way. I guess ppl do it so that they can be labeled which makes it easier for ppl to categorize them. Meh..I duno.

Exactly! It's like they're basing their entire identities on stupid little high school labels, and a lot of them are done high school! And it's not like all "emo" people have clinical depression, either. Haha this has been a good set of comments.

Yeah I'm not so much making fun of the music as the image... Plus, you can be clinically depressed without making it your identity by wearing black all the time- that just makes people assume that all depressed people are angsty, which isn't true. Haha, I wear wigs all the time! I have to go compose something now...

Just thought I would throw this idea in there....

Wearing certain clothing because you like it, regardless if it happens to be chains and spikes, or if its something frilly and pink...wearing something because you like it and you feel comfortbale in it is completlty different than wearing certain things so that OTHER people will like it.

But yea...everyone already knows that...ok...Im done now =P

Yeah, or because you think other people will assume you belong somewhere... I agree, just wear what you like, be who you are... I think we should combine our journals to make a self-help book...

What do you mean by apples and oranges?

I'm sorry if what I said was offensive, but I really wasn't trying to label people- I was more annoyed with people labelling themselves, because it's something that has always bothered me.

I dunno, I just tried to steer the conversation towards fruit, but my intentions failed. Boo.
