So, Kris and I were chatting with onefishclappin  and krikwennavd  last night and they mentioned that they were thinking of dumping their cable service.  Like them, I'm currently using the bundled TW service (cable TV, internet, phone) and I'm really thinking the phone (in particular) is a Bad Deal.

Right now, they're charging $40/month (really $48 after taxes and misc. ( Read more... )

$40/month for a landline does sound like a lot. Good luck with VOIP!

I think we are going to go TW-free when we get a chance.
My plan:
Kill TW ($148/month for cable, phone, & internet)
Get AT&T Uverser for internet ($35/mo for 6Mbps)
Get one of the VOIPs for phone ($10/mo it looks like, based on our normal usage)
Get special cycling TV via internet thing David wants to get his bike fix ($10/month)
Get cheapo NetFlix subscription to replace my scarce TV watching ($9/month, plus I think I could use this to watch stuff through the TiVo too, need to look into it.)

So our $148/month bill turns into ~$64/month. We'll make up the initial start up costs (modem, etc) in the first month.

One disadvantage - my TiVo will get neglected. I love my TiVo so much that makes me sad :( Maybe I'll get an antenna & new TV or converter box so that I can still use it to get network shows...

Oh, and final advantage - screw the man (ie. Time Warner). I've been feeling gypped by them for sometime, so I'm very happy to say adios.
