004: [Action] It seems to be a popular past time

Nov 30, 2009 20:07

[Reid is sitting in the kitchen at the table. He's got a bowl of Count Chocala and a book. He's reading while eating the sugary cereal. He flips pages fast, eyes skimming over them only a second before he turns the page.]

[So Korea has decided to come down to the kitchen, because he was sulking, and that's never good. Thus some rice and kimchi will fix that. He makes his way over to the table, chopsticks in hand, and begins to shovel in some food. But watching the other person read like a ninja crazy catches his attention.]

Wow. That's the fastest I've ever seen anyone read da ze!

[Reid doesn't look up from his book or his bowl when the other person sits down. He's engrossed in his book. Even when he answers the man he continues to read]

Our conscious mind can process 16 bits of information per second, our unconscious however can process 11 million.

[Om nom nom.]

Well, that may be true, but that still doesn't change the fact that you read faster than anyone else I've seen.

[Reid looks up then and gives him a bit of a crooked smile.}

Th-thanks. I read faster than most people. I'm Reid.

[Reid looks up at the woman after he speaks, realizing that doesn't technically answer her question]

Yes, I can really read this fast.

... Uh-huh.

But how?

[Have a scrunchy face Reid for a second. He hasn't actually thought that much about it. He just does]

Uhm well...there are words that your brain will fill in whether you read them or not. Like The and And. You train your eyes to just skim over those. Most people read to themselves, even silently they're 'hearing' what they're reading in their heads. You have to s-stop doing that if you're going to read quickly.

[Faith does her sauntering bad ass thing (hey she's used to having to project the kick ass vibe, keep the challengers at bay) into the kitchen and heads for the freezers. Mmm Hot Pocket time.

This is her so not glancing at Reid every once in awhile while her four cheeseburger Hot Pockets heat up. Very suave. Close to gawking, even.

Once they're done, she sits at the breakfast bar and after she scarfs one down, she finally pipes up.]

So, you like books huh?

[Reid notices when Faith saunters in. It's hard not to. He makes an effort to go back to his book. Gawking at her will only make her more uncomfortable and Reid would like for her to be comfortable with him eventually. It's part of the whole saving process and keeping count things the BAU discourages him from doing. When she talks to him, he looks up at her and smiles slightly]

Y-yeah. I always have.

Do you?

[She's trying not to look interested, even though she really is. Reid's very far from normal and Faith isn't sure she likes it, but she is curious as to where the beast within is hiding. She scrunches up her face and shrugs.]

Not big on the literature. More of a TV and video games kinda person.

[She's still watching you from afar, though, interesting man that doesn't behave like a man should!]

[He nods at her. It's a common preference]

I l-like Guitar Hero.

You kn-know a lot of TV shows and movies have literary roots and reflections.

[Hey. It's one of his citizens. Reading. And liking it.

Obviously there was something wrong with this picture.

America enters the kitchen, looking for burgers to eat. Reid looks busy, so he tries not to bother him. Still, though, he's curious as to what he's doing, and pointedly watches him.]

[It takes Reid a few minutes to care that America is watching him so closely. He finally looks up at him.]

Can I help you?

..Huh?

[He blinks at Reid.]

Oh, no, I was just watching you read. [He pops open a soda can and takes a swig.]

Okay.

[All she wanted was some milk and cookies. So when she sees him...ugh, reading, she pointedly ignores him and goes to fetch what she wanted.

...Until she realized the speed at which he was turning the pages. Not even her sisters, bibliophiliacs that they were, could read that fast.]

You read faster than my sisters. I thought that wasn't possible.

[Reid looks up from his reading when the girl speaks. He smiles slightly then nods]

I read faster than most people. Your sisters speed read?

It depends on the book, but usually they can read more in a day than most people in a month. I bet they've read whatever you're reading.

[She then proceeds to chug a glass of milk.]

Yeah? This is The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It really depends on h-how busy I am whether I get a l-lot of reading done or not.
