I've been a Seagate dude for a while and almost got a 500 gig SATA drive from them the other week. Luckily Best Buy was sold out, as I started reading the shit reviews a few days later.

I've now decided to procrastinate with the PC upgrade and instead I got a Western Digital backup USB drive. In the spring if the Seagate tales of woe haven't disappeared I'll probably get a WD internal drive cuz with computers it's a "who's screwed me most recently" world.

Samsung makes hard drives now but I haven't seen them anywhere except online accompanied by mixed reviews. My Samsung 19" CRT monitor is still operational after 4 years, although I've probably just jinxed myself.

Yeah, my CRT has been rock solid and I just replaced it on a whim.
Samsung makes great monitors.

It just feels like buying a camera from Toyota.

I've had no issues with my WD 250gb of 3 years of continuous read/write file sharing or my new Maxtor 500gb. Personally thou, I'd go WD.

And now my fucking hard drive is completely fine.
I still put a fresh copy of windows on the damn thing, so I need to reinstall the updates and blah blah blah.

I got a WD, and I'll probably use it for my main drive, but I have no idea what the hell is going on.

A dieing drive will come back to life once it's had a chance to cool down, but it will still be dieing. It's still best to copy everything over to the new drive, especially if you are doing a clean OS install. Also, see if you can find a S.M.A.R.T. software reader and do a scan of the dieing drive. It should tell you roughly how reliable it would be as a secondary drive.
