Seto never really got to know her mother. She died giving birth to her younger brother Mokuba and their father died in a car accident when Seto was eight. They were both put into an orphanage not long after that. Seto did everything that she could to take care of her younger brother and make sure that he was all right. When she was 10 years old she meet Gozaburo Kaiba, who had come to the orphanage for a publicity stunt.
Seto challenged him to a game of chess with the stipulation being that if she won, he had to adopt both her and Mokuba. She won and was adopted along with her brother was adopted by Gozaburo Kaiba. However, Seto didn’t expect what happened after that. She was placed in an accelerated school program and forced to study several subjects including economics, foreign languages, social studies, and game theory.

Six years later at the age of sixteen, Seto had gained the knowledge needed to take control of a large portion of KaibaCorp, and when Mokuba gave her his shares, she took control and ousted Gozaburo, who committed suicide not long after by throwing himself out of one of the windows.

Seto hasn’t just been studying to run KaibaCorp, she has also become the Intercontinental Champion of Duel Monsters and owns three of the rarest cards in Duel Monsters. After learning of the existence of a fourth Blue Eyes White Dragon, Seto did what she could to track it down.

When she finally found the owner of the fourth Blue Eyes White Dragon card, she tried to trade the owner, who turned out to be Yugi Mouto’s grandfather, Sugoroku. He turned down the offer to trade, saying that the card was a gift from a very close friend. Not willing to take no for an answer, Seto kidnapped Yugi’s grandfather and forced him to duel for the card.

After winning the Duel, Seto tore the card in half in front of Sugoroku, Yugi and his friends so that it couldn’t be used against her in a duel. The duel against Kaiba had taken its toll on Sugoroku and he had to be taken to the hospital. To avenge his grandfather, Yugi duels Kaiba.

During their duel, Yugi, along with the Spirit of the Millennium Puzzle, manages to summon Exodia, a duel monster even more powerful than the Blue Eyes White Dragon. Yugi also uses the powers to destroy the darkness within Seto’s mind, leaving her with no interest in dueling or her company and leaves on a trip to find herself.
While she is gone, Pegasus J. Crawford, the creator of Duel Monsters along with the board of directors, known as the Big Five, scheme to take over KaibaCorp by abducting Mokuba. Another part of Pegasus’s scheme is to hold a card tournament on a private island, which Yugi participates in.

After finding out about the kidnapping of her younger brother, Seto heads to Duelist Kingdom with her prototype Duel Disk in order to get her brother back. Here she is offered a deal, defeat Yugi in duel to gain the right to duel Pegasus for her brother. She duels Yugi in one of the castle towers, but even with the power of the Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon, she is still on the verge of defeat.

Without a second thought, she moves to the edge of the turret, forcing Yugi to forfeit the duel or risk killing her. She moves on to duel Pegasus, but is overwhelmed and defeated by the power of the Millennium Eye. Her soul is then captured, but when Yugi defeats Pegasus, both Kaiba sibling’s souls are released.

Several months later, Seto is summoned to the Domino City Museum by Ishizu Ishtar. There she is shown a stone tablet depicting a duel between her past self and the Pharaoh. She doesn’t believe Ishizu’s warnings that the past is bound to repeat itself, and only gets interested when Ishizu starts her tale of the Egyptian God Cards, three massively powerful duel monster cards that Pegasus entrusted to her. Two of the God Cards had been stolen by her brother Marik, but she gives the third, Obelisk The Tormenter to her and encourages her to host a tournament in order to lure out Marik and his Rare Hunters. In order to gain the other two God Cards herself, Seto agrees to host the tournament.

However, during the preliminary planning stages of the tournament, tragedy struck KaibaCorp when a disgruntled former employee managed to make it to Seto’s office with a gun. Without warning, he opened fire on both Seto and Mokuba, killing the younger Kaiba sibling almost instantly but leaving Seto wounded before security could take control of the situation.

After recovering in the hospital and Mokuba’s funeral, Seto keeps herself out of the spotlight as she tries to recover from the loss of her brother. When she finally returns to KaibaCorp again, she continues her plans for her Battle City Tournament.

However, tragedy strikes again shortly after the beginning of the Battle City tournament. There is another assassination attempt by another disgruntled employee manages to find Seto while she is dueling and shoots her four times and leaves her for dead. As she tries to go to the hospital again, she is brought to Econtra.
