X Marks The Spot

The first concert absolutely sucks.

From the moment they step on stage, Miyata feels that something is off. He keeps standing in the wrong spot, moving in the wrong direction, being generally wrong. He only manages to get through the first few songs by following the others' hissed instructions and annoyed gestures. Their voices are low enough, their movements subtle enough, that it's unlikely the audience notices. It's enough to get Miyata where he has to go. Unfortunately, he's still behind a bit, and obviously so.

It takes longer than it probably should for him to figure out what's wrong, and then it suddenly hits him with all the obviousness of a brick. Somehow, he's unconsciously learned his stage placements in reference to Tamamori's. And Tamamori isn't here. He wonders how that could have happened, wonders why he didn't notice before; but then, Tamamori's always there. He's never had a reason not to be.

But today Tamamori has a reason, and Miyata is suffering for it. He kicks himself mentally, but doesn't really know what to do about it. He feels completely lost, like he'd had red Xs placed all over his mental map and now someone's gone and erased them all.

The MC doesn't go any better- it's exactly the same as his dancing. Tamamori has always been his measure for success. All his jokes, each one is for Tamamori, to make Tamamori laugh, to make it so that Miyata can see his beautiful smile. Today everything falls flat, and it's painful, the other members working hard to cover his miserable attempts.

By the time they have a short break between songs, longer than just a costume change, Miyata is exhausted.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" Nikaido snaps.

Yokoo elbows Nikaido harshly in the side. "Are you feeling alright, Miyacchi?" he asks, looking concerned.

"Yeah, I'm... I'm not sick," Miyata says, because he's certainly not fine, but he thinks that was more what Yokoo was asking.

"What's wrong?"

"I'm..." Miyata doesn't want to say it out loud. He doubts anyone will be surprised, but it still sounds pathetic.

In the end, he doesn't have to. Kitayama gives him a sharp look, then states it like a general announcement. "Tamamori's not here."

The others all stare and Miyata looks at the ground. "It's stupid, I know."

"Are you serious?" Fujigaya asks skeptically.

"Are you retarded?" Nikaido isn't quite as kind.

"I'm sorry, I just-" Miyata doesn't have time to finish before the members of Mis Snow Man begin pouring backstage, signaling a song switch, and Kis-My-Ft2 needs to get in position.

"We'll help you," Senga whispers as he brushes past, and Miyata gives him a grateful look. He's going to need all the help he can get.

The rest of the concert goes by in a blur of frantic concentration and is over before he realizes it. He starts to apologize as they make their way back to the dressing rooms, but Kitayama cuts him off.

"Later. Lunch first. We'll fix it later." It successfully distracts the rest of them, as everyone struggles to get out of their costumes, the adrenaline rush of performance wearing off quickly. Nikaido glares at Miyata before dropping onto the couch to get in a nap before Kitayama can claim it. Their oldest member lets him, choosing to eat instead.

Nobody mentions Miyata's trouble while they eat, and when they're all finished, Kitayama rouses Nikaido fully from the couch where Senga had been force-feeding him yakisoba and then surprisingly doesn't take his place.

"We're practicing," he states, and no one argues. They're tired and they have an entire concert still to go, but if one of them has a problem, they all have a problem, and that needs to get fixed. Miyata feels rather guilty.

They take over the largest space available and Yokoo sits one of the CD players they use to practice in the corner.

"Miyacchi, come here." Kitayama is holding a detached swooshy bit from his costume, and he holds it up. "Turn around."

Miyata gets a sinking feeling. "...why?"

"You'll see," Kitayama says, tying the fabric tight around Miyata's head, blocking his sight. "Or rather, you won't."

Miyata stands nervously as the others mutter and shuffle around, and then someone grabs him by the shoulders. He stumbles over himself as he's guided a few meters away.

"Okay," Kitayama says. "You're in the first position for Crave It."

Miyata nods his head.

"Where's Tama-chan?" Kitayama continues.

"He's not-"

"No." Miyata is interrupted before he can finish. "Where is Tamamori?"

It sinks in after a second, what Kitayama wants. Miyata raises his arm to point out to his right and a bit forward. "Over there." He can hear some of the others snicker.

"Good. Can you see him?"

And Miyata realizes that he can. He can see Tamamori, and in fact, he can see all of them, knows instinctively where each member is standing. "Yeah," he says in surprise. And suddenly the red X's come flooding back.

"Okay. We're going to run it through. Do your best and we'll all watch out for you so we don't crash." Miyata can hear as Kitayama moves back toward his own position.

"Wataru?"

"Got it," Yokoo replies, and he must have hit a button on the CD player, because the music for Crave It suddenly fills the room.

Miyata focuses and watches Tamamori in his head. He can almost see the other members, and he can hear them, and it's not difficult. He lets himself feel the music, flow with it, follow the X's around in his head. When the music stops, he waits, and someone unties the costume bit covering his eyes. Miyata blinks, the sudden light making Senga's face a bit hazy for a moment, and then focuses on Senga's grin.

"Nice!" Senga chirps, and when Miyata looks around, no one else has moved and Miyata figures out that he's only about a half meter off from where he's supposed to be. The other members are grinning to match Senga.

"See?" Yokoo says. "You can do it with your eyes closed, quite literally."

("Unlike Arashi," Nikaido adds, and other than Fujigaya's death glare, mostly likely for insulting some of his favorite senpai, everyone ignores him.)

"You know these dances, Miyacchi," Kitayama assures. "And you can follow Tama-chan all you want. He's always here, even when he's not, because he's Kisumai, and that's who we are."

Fujigaya mimes gagging, but he's smiling, and Miyata realizes that Kitayama is right. It doesn't mean Miyata likes having Tamamori away, he's definitely not happy about it, but he can manage.

The second concert of the day is a vast improvement on the first. It's not perfect by any means, and Miyata's pretty quiet during the MC, but it goes well enough that he doesn't feel like a total failure at the end of it.

Miyata knows that Tamamori is going to be in Sunday's show, but it doesn't stop his heart from swelling when he sees him on Sunday morning. He tries to tell himself that it's just relief and finds that he can't even lie in his head.

"So I hear you can't live without me," Tamamori says in greeting and Miyata doesn't even try.

"I can't!" he wails, and throws himself at Tamamori with a grin, his messenger bag caught between them as he wraps his arms around Tamamori's neck. Tamamori laughs a bit and brings his hands up to Miyata's waist. Even though any already-present members ignore them, Miyata thinks Tamamori is going to push him away. But he doesn't, and just lets his hands rest there, warmth sinking in through Miyata's layers.

"Well, you can stop sucking, 'cause I'm here."

Miyata smiles and lets go with one arm long enough to shift his bag out from between them, slipping just a bit closer. "How was filming?" he asks.

Tamamori looks a bit chagrined. "Well, it was okay. I don't know how good I am at it, though."

"I'm sure you're brilliant," Miyata insists, and Tamamori's smile goes all soft.

"You think everything I do is brilliant," he points out, but he looks happy, and that makes Miyata happy.

"Ugh, get a room!" Hamada shouts as he breezes past the open doorway, and Tamamori tries to pull away, but Miyata doesn't let him go. He sticks out his tongue at Hamada.

"Go back to Kansai if you don't like it, loser!"

Tamamori giggles softly, and Miyata can feel it shake through him where they're pressed together.

"You missed me?"

"I missed you," Miyata readily admits, and is both surprised and thrilled when Tamamori leans down just a bit to kiss him.

"You only didn't see each other for one day," Senga throws over. "Can you really miss each other?"

"Yes." Miyata pulls away only long enough to answer, and goes right back to his attempt to make Tamamori breathless.

He doesn't quite get there though, as Kitayama barges right between them, last to arrive as usual. "You're in the way," is all he says, and Miyata gives Tamamori a last grin before he follows Kitayama into the room to drop his bag. Tamamori trails him, making a slight detour to save his flat iron from the mess of products accumulating on the counter in front of Nikaido and Yokoo.

They all gather together before the start of the concert, ready to go, and Fujigaya passes his usual lead to Tamamori. "Welcome back, Tama-chan. Why don't you go ahead?"

Everyone puts their hands into the circle, and Tamamori clears his throat.

"Let's work hard today," he says, and then leads them in a well-known cheer.

"Fighto-OH!"
