I honestly thought that this would never happen in my lifetime. We have an African-American in the White House. Completely bypassing Vice President, and going straight for President.
I honestly couldn't care less if he is black or white or green or striped. I get it that it's a big deal for you guys, but for me - from a European perspective - the most important thing is, that he seems to know the world. Like, he has travelled, he has lived abroad, he has a multi-cultural and multi-national background and might actually be aware of the fact, that there is a civilized world beyond the US. And that even Non-Americans are people. Plus, he seems to believe in most of the things I do. Like not bombarding countries just because. He seems a sincere, intelligent and reflective person - everything Bush was not.
I was just watching the news, and they interviewed Frank-Walter Steinmeier, our secretary of state. When asked what he liked about Bush, what he will miss, he considered the question for quite a while, before telling the journalist "well, he was always a very direct person.". Hee. I guess, that says it all...
Oh, no, believe me, the best thing truly IS that it was Obama and not McCain, that it's a Democrat and not a Republican, and that Obama's views are so much more world-friendly. And American-friendly. And PEOPLE-friendly.
But that happens, every so often. It's happened before.
But the part of this that has never happened before is the fact that our nation has FINALLY elected a black person to office.
Aside from all of the other very important things that his election means, this is a HUGE step for our nation. And I am very proud. The best part about it is that he was NOT elected along racial lines. Over 60% of Obama's supporters were white. So he was elected based on the issues, and not on his color.
Which is exactly the way it should be.
Which is why I'm so proud.
Because our country FINALLY proved that we might actually be a country where anyone can become president, which is what they've been teaching in school for generations.
I am so proud of our nation for breaking such an incredible boundary.
Oh, the world is looking forward to that, too! Although I have the feeling, that we already know them quite a bit, with all the media hype going on. You could hardly escape your election in our media.

And awed.
And relieved.
And excited.
And impressed.

Blows my mind.
In a good way.
