What's the hardest thing you've ever had to do?

Her name was Kerri. She was brilliant--really wanted to learn. She asked to stay after class and talk about a paper.

I should have said no. I knew I should have.

I told her I would drive her home. It doesn't look great, but I thought if she wasn't at the bus stop it wouldn't happen, that I could avoid it.

There was a. Gang fight, I guess. The police never really found out what happened, but shots were fired. My front tire blew, we spun out into a tree. I reached over at the last second to hold her hand. She was fifteen, her birthday was two weeks away.

They're all hard, but that one... that one was probably the worst.

That sounds incredibly difficult. You're an angel of death, aren't you? I've met a few of them in my time. I can't imagine what that must be like to have to live that way.

If you'd have said no, she would have been alone, wouldn't she? It's terrible... dying alone.

I think you made the right choice.

I don't think I made the right choice, but I've been around the block enough times to realize there isn't really a choice to make, right or wrong.

If I had said no she would have been shot at a bus stop. Either way, the kid dies.
