When he first hears the news of the solo stage play, Shige's pretty damn excited about it. But once that initial feeling starts to wear off, he gets concerned. Shige knows he's not the most popular, he knows he can't sing or dance well compared to Yamapi or Tegoshi. But Shige is determined to make the best of the situation, use this opportunity to boost his popularity, so he works hard on the script, makes sure the blocking is perfect, works with the technicians on the lighting and the carpenters on the set.

The stage play goes over well in Tokyo, and when it's time to move down to Osaka - his hometown - Shige's feeling good about the whole thing. But when he steps off the train in Osaka station, he starts to get a little nervous again. Every other time he's been in Osaka, it was either a family vacation or a NEWS concert tour. Shige can't expect to look out into the audience and see a familiar face anywhere - he'd be surprised if he could even pick out Kansai Junior at all. He's caught up in his own thoughts the entire taxi ride to the theater and lets himself be led down the back hallways like a zombie.

Half an hour before curtain call, Shige gets a flood of emails on his phone. His parents, Koyama, Tegoshi, Massu, Yamapi, some of the juniors - all of them wishing him luck in Osaka. It revives Shige, and he goes out on stage and gives it his all.

It's part of the script that at certain times he speaks in the Kansai dialect, but now that he's down in Kansai, he lets the dialect linger for longer than it's supposed to. He lets himself be just a little more eccentric, and the audience eats it up. It's a complete coincidence that he lets his eyes drift out and scan the audience, and he nearly chokes and forgets his lines when he sees Nishikido smirking, sitting in a seat near the emergency exit. Shige catches himself though, and finishes opening night in Osaka without any other problems.

When the curtains close, Shige runs off stage, all the way back to his dressing room, and is only half surprised to find Nishikido sitting on the couch, flipping through a magazine, like it's his dressing room.

"What are you doing here?"

Nishikido doesn't look up from the magazine. "I'm in the middle of an article. Don't interrupt me."

Shige stands in the doorway for another minute, before moving in. He's tired and decides not to let Nishikido's presence bother him. He stands next to the rack for his clothes while he gets undressed and carefully hangs everything up, smoothing out some wrinkles on his shirt.

"You should talk in the Kansai dialect more often."

Shige stops in the middle of getting dressed, jeans unbuttoned, hanging off his hips. "What?"

Nishikido throws the magazine on the small coffee table in front of the couch. "It needs some work though. You don't use it enough, so it's lost some of it's Kansai-ness. It sounds like a Tokyo-kid trying to pretend he's from Osaka."

Shige frowns a little bit and goes back to getting dressed. "That's basically what I am."

"Your birth certificate says 'Osaka'. Properly represent your hometown, Katou."

"What about you? You got an apartment in Tokyo and practically moved there cause that's where the work is. You left Osaka too, just much later than me. But it was by your choice. I was a kid and my dad got transferred."

Nishikido doesn't reply and Shige can suddenly feel that the air is a lot heavier than it was a minute ago, and when he turns around, Nishikido is glaring, looking like he's debating punching Shige in the face, or making him cry.

"I come all the way out here, to your shitty solo stage play, cause I figured you'd be stressed about being back in Osaka all by yourself, and this is the thanks I get. I lecture from the Tokyo-boy."

Shige sighs and starts packing up his bag. The couch squeaks - like most old couches do when some one gets up - and Shige figures that Ryo has decided to leave. But then there's a hand on his shoulder turning around, and he's pushed up against the wall, between the clothing rack and the counter by the mirrors. Nishikido is still glaring, his face intense and all Shige can think is, I really don't want to deal with this right now.

Nishikido doesn't do anything, and it's unsettling. Just keeps glaring at Shige, who's waiting to get punched or insulted, or something. But Nishikido just glares, and intimidates him with his expression, like he used to do all the time when NEWS was first formed and he was bitter about being put in the group.

"The lighting set-up from Tokyo won't work here. The space is different and it makes you look washed out and a little sickly. The stage here is deeper - don't waste that space. Re-block your movements. And change you're wardrobe. It's boring."

Shige blinks. "What?"

Nishikido lets go of Shige, but doesn't step back. "You heard me."

Shige is still a little weary. "If you're going to punch me, than just do it already."

Nishikido laughs and moves away from Shige, meandering towards the door. "It's more fun to make you all stressed out by not saying anything."

"Nishikido-"

"Get to work, Tokyo-boy. You're next show is tomorrow, and I've given you a lot of homework. I expect some improvements."

And then Nishikido's walking out the door, seemingly, quite proud of himself.

--

24 hours later, Shige's finished with the second day's show, and when he walks into the dressing room, Nishikido is sitting on the couch, acting like he owns the place.

The second week of every month is unofficially "NEWS magazine photoshoot"- week. They're herded around by a group of managers to each magazine's specific shoot location, dressed and styled. It's tiring, but not necessarily a lot of work. It's Tuesday, and they're all in a studio, having their Myojo shots taken. All the solo pictures are done, and all that's left in the group picture for the special pull-out poster that's to be included with next month's issue.

The photographer's looking at them all, frowning a little bit, hand on his chin, occasionally turning to say something to his assistant. Tegoshi's getting restless, Masuda is hungry and keeps eyeing the snack tray that's directly behind the photographer on a table. Yamashita and Nishikido are quietly talking amongst themselves and Koyama patiently waiting, like always. Shige is getting irritated, having this time wasted. Finally, the photographer speaks.

"This shot is a little hard. Since it's for a pull-out poster, it'll work best if you're all about the same height." He turns to the assistant, "Go get a small block for Nishikido-kun to stand on."

The assistant runs off while Nishikido looks offended and ready to kill the photographer. When the assistant asks Nishikido to move so that the block can be placed, all the managers give Nishikido a very specific look, and he can't do anything but what the assistant and photographer ask.

When everything's all set up, Shige turns to look at Nishikido, who's next to him on his right, and even though he knows he shouldn't, Shige can't resist.

"Nishikido-kun."

He turns, looking ready to kill.

"We're the same height now." Shige smiles. "Eye-to-eye."

Nishikido turns back to the camera, pastes on a perfect idol smile, and when the photographer declares the day's shoot done, he very calmly punches Shige in the face.

(And is promptly reprimanded by all the managers. But Nishikido doesn't mind. He feels much better now.)
