People write to me periodically about the problems in their communities with people wanting initiation into this or that, and there not being enough initiates to go around. I wrote a whole article for Thorn Magazine (no relation!) on this subject regarding the opening of the Mystery in all of its variety and glory.

The Episcopal Church defines a sacrament as an outward and physical sign of inward and spiritual grace. ("Grace" might be wrong--twenty years and two glasses of wine do a number on the memory.) I have found it interesting to contemplate initiation in this context. Initiation as shaktipat. Initiation as a mark of progress made. Initiation as an event to adjust the internal compass. Initiation as a tiny tease of a taste of The Divine.
