Sick of fighting with my hair in the never-ending humidity, I finally decided to quit whining and just do it. I decided to go for the
Big Snip.
Driving home through horrendous Orchard Road traffic, after my haircut.
And I am so glad I did. It's so easy to style - I can leave it to air-dry, add a little hair wax before I go out, rumple my fingers through it, and I'm done. Using a hair-dryer takes about two minutes. It's nice not having hair hanging in my face on a hot, sticky day.
I had been worried that my hair would be butchered and that I would look too dull, like an 'auntie' or worse, like a domestic helper. But my Oddball Stylist did a great job. I've cut my hair with him on and off since 2005, and I think he has always done his best work with my shorter cuts, even though some of our experiments have turned out quite 'interesting'. After my haircut, I realised that my previous hairstyle had been the true disaster - frizzy, floppy in all the wrong ways, and just dragging me down.
Oddball Stylist and me at the salon.
It's only hair, but I really do feel different after the cut. I feel like I'm back to my old self, the way I was before The Bun was born. I had resisted cutting my hair so much because I had somehow locked myself into a 'moms-look-a-certain-way' frame, even though I don't believe in it and I can't even pin down what exactly that look is.
The night before my haircut I also gave The Bun a DIY haircut in our bathroom. Unfortunately I don't possess the skills that Oddball Stylist does, so The Bun presently has a dorky geek chic fringe that will hopefully grow out fine by the time we hit the festive season. His curls hide a multitude of snipping sins, especially in the back of his head. Soon enough we'll actually have matching haircuts, which will be really funny to see!
