http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Youmu_Konpaku Personality: Compared to the usual inhabitants of Gensokyo-and the Netherworld’s own mistress-Youmu is relatively straightforward and easy to understand. Respectful, honest, gullible, a little naïve and a terrible liar. The half-ghost is a stickler for respect and politeness, and may even refrain from attacking someone if they apologize for harassing her. She almost always addresses someone formally, even when instructed not to-long ingrained habits and possibly lack of a spine.
She is comparatively young by youkai standards-though she does not fully consider herself such--many of her peers reach into the triple digits and beyond. Youmu is just pushing sixty, herself. But she realizes full-humans are rather put off by this and youkai usually dismissive, and Youmu doesn’t make a point of sharing it.
Though her nature as a half-ghost naturally incites much curiosity, many find her answers unsatisfactory or frustrating. Though Youmu’s responses are straightforward, she has little else to draw upon except what she has known. She doesn’t know what it is to be fully human, with the body and soul as one entity-so she can draw no comparison whatsoever. She is likely to turn the question right back on the person who asked.
As a student of swordsmanship, Youmu is proficient in their care; how to clean, sharpen, and maintain an edge. Abusing a poor sharp edge will make her sad. Youmu’s knowledge is primarily centered around Eastern styles, but she knows of Western and European swordsmanship and is interested in learning more about them. If it’s sharp, she probably knows a few trivia facts about it-or, failing that, enough to make a decently educated guess.
In an ironic addition, considering her species, Youmu is terrified of ghosts. She isn’t scared of herself, but when ghosts are somewhere they’re not supposed to be, it frightens her immensely. Primarily, this fear seems to be of uncontrolled ghosts-when on business within the Netherword, dealing with the formerly-living is practically a requirement, though most shades are well behaved. She can’t really explain this fear, either-except that she screams and runs away when encountering such, as a general rule. Something about how nature is supposed to be…
This inexplicable phobia kind of makes her main sword Roukanken’s ability…less than useful. Being able to kill ten ghosts in a single blow is all well and good if you’re not constantly mashing the FLEE command.
What your character can offer: Ridiculous speed, primarily. Like, one-quarter-the-speed-of-light ridiculous, though this level of swiftness is only attainable in short bursts. Youmu is still extremely fast otherwise and doesn’t get tired very easily. She has a minor ability of time and space manipulation, as well, though this is generally only to a personal extent--so she doesn’t vaporize herself or whatever she’s wielding at such high speeds, for example. This manipulation is keyed to her speed, however, and is not used otherwise.
Her power of concentration is very developed despite her comparatively young age. Youmu can focus through pain, adrenaline, illusion, a head clouded by illness almost anything-through decades of practice, she can fall into practically a meditative state of mind at the drop of a hat. In the more extreme end of this “no-think” state, her eyes turn red, and her movements become smoother-and much, much faster.
It’s obviously a bit difficult to reason with her in this state. Though, apologizing for any prior transgression helps-it is not a “berserk mode”.
As a half-ghost-and a resident of Gensokyo, however indirectly-Youmu is rather slow to fall, when she isn’t herself flying without any apparent assistance. She isn’t particularly fast, and primarily uses this ability to dash and jump about at speed without threat of injury from falls. In addition to flying, Youmu has her own set of…less than lethal danmaku cards. Danmaku fires from both her human form, and the ghost-half when it is present, providing.
She is also knowledgeable about blades; their innumerable types, forms, metals and maintenance. She also knows how to wield at least most of them; others, she can at least hazard an educated guess. Her style generally emphasizes speed rather than power, though anyone knowledgeable of such things will notice that it seems unfinished; the body is complete, but lacking final polish.
As much as Youmu knows about swords, she also knows about gardens-though most specifically about cherry trees, she can care for other kinds of plants as well.
What items will they be bringing with them? Two swords, part of a matched set.
Roukanken is the larger of her two swords, a katana forged by youkai and unable to be wielded-or drawn--by normal humans. It has a cherry blossom sprouting out of the end of the saya, which neither ages, wilts, or grows-remaining static. If cut, the flower will reappear shortly afterwards. The sword is enchanted to be able to kill up to ten ghosts in a single strike-though kill is a subjective term. In its usual mode of operation, the ghosts were dispelled-and reformed in Hakugyokuro, where they should have been in the first place.
Hakurouken is the shorter wakizashi, and the ancestral blade of the Konpaku family. It does not dispel ghosts, but rather cleaves any lingering doubts or confusion, and allows them to attain enlightenment. Using it on a human will just cut them and they will bleed.
