#1:

As the bell rang off, the once silent classroom was now filled with loud chattering and dragging sound of the classroom door. A pair of eyes was fixed on Morimoto Ryutaro's back as he stepped out of the classroom.

----------------------------------------------------------

"Ke-chan? Ke-chan!"

Instantly, I snapped out from my thoughts and stared at my best friend widely. I watched as she closed her eyes for a second and heaved a heavy sigh before opening them.

"Ai-chan, is there something wrong?" I asked, raising my eyebrows.

Hearing my question, she let out another heavy sigh before sticking her index finger towards the classroom door.

"Yes, there's something wrong!" she exclaimed softly which I was taken aback.

"You're supposed to be going after Morimoto-kun who had just left!" she added.

Her last sentence struck me and I gasped loudly.

"Bento!"

Just then, I felt a regular object placed on both my palms and averted my gaze down. It was the bento that I had prepared for him in the morning and before I knew it, I was already standing in the hallway.

"Bring this bento to him now or all your efforts will go down the drain!" she hushed quickly before giving me a strong push and banged the door closed.

I stared down at the bento lying in my hands for a moment before running towards the place that I knew he would always head to, the open rooftop.

----------------------------------------------------------

Finally, I was left with the last flight of stairs before I would reach the entrance to the rooftop. My heart pounded hard against my chest and I could feel more heat creeping up my cheeks as each second passed. Upon reaching the entrance, I realized that the door was left open.

"He must be here," I told myself mentally while my eyes were darting around the open space, searching for his figure.

At last, I spotted him. He was leaning against the railings with his back facing me. Staring at his back view, a smile was adorned on my lips. Just as my fingertips brushed against the handle, I heard footsteps running up the stairs at a fast pace and decided to hide myself in a dark corner. The door creaked open and the footsteps soon faded away.

Cautiously, I moved out of my hiding place and leaned my back against the wall. As my fingers tried to reach for the handle the second time, a female voice on the other side of the wall made them froze in mid-air.

"Ryutaro-kun, this bento is for you. I've made it by myself just this morning. Please accept it!" the girl said quickly and I dropped my gaze on the regular-shape box lying on my palm.

"Why, thank you, Risa-chan. That's really nice of you," he thanked and my grip around the box tightened.

"Well…I-I wanted to cheer you up after what had happened recently. So, I thought that making bento would be a good idea," she added slowly and I bit my lips while my gaze was still fixed on the box.

Suddenly, the place became awfully silent. The next thing I heard was shuffling of things followed by his voice.

"Thank you, Risa-chan. I really appreciate it," he thanked again.

I took in a deep breath before leaning over and peeked through the door frame. Unknowingly, warm tears trickled down my cheeks. Cupping my free hand over my mouth, I turned away and allowed my legs to take control, bringing me to somewhere which would silent my broken heart.

His free arm was wrapping around her small body frame, hugging her.

As I panted heavily, I dropped on my feet and pulled my knees closed to me while sobbing uncontrollably. After what felt like hours, I lifted my head and looked around.

"I'm at the school's backyard..," I muttered quietly.

Standing on my feet, I walked around aimlessly until I bumped into something hard. My gaze traced down to the object slowly before realizing that it was a dumpster. I stifled a laugh at my clumsiness before darting my gaze between the bento and the dumpster.

At last, I removed the cover and poured all the contents into the dumpster. As I placed the cover back, I heaved a heavy sigh and walked back gingerly to the classroom.

Why didn't I pull open the door first? I wish you’d know that I've made this bento for you.

After hearing that news, I knew you were really upset. During lessons, you would always look out of the windows with a grim look.

The smile you wore every single day, it was just to stop us from worrying about you.

Since Risa-chan had taken over the place, I guess there's nothing else left for me. She could cheer you up better than I do.

Closing my eyes, tears ran down my cheeks again. Just then, a cool breeze came by and blew away the tears. Curving my lips into a sad smile, I muttered the words almost silently.

For the last time, I love you, Morimoto Ryutaro.

#2:

"Yori-chan!"

Unconsciously, a smile was painted across my lips as the voice entered my mind.

"What is it, Yuuri-kun?" I asked, tilting my head slightly.

He grabbed my wrist and pulled me to a corner. I blinked a few times before looking at him confusedly.

"Yuuri-kun, you're acting very weird today," I commented, raising my eyebrows.

He ruffled his hair lightly before jamming his hand into the pocket in his school pants and took out something. Though the process was fast, I thought that I saw a small regular-shape box.

"Here."

He handed the box to me and quickly looked away, avoiding my gaze. My heart skipped a beat as I stared down at the box.

This box…is he giving it to me?

"This box..," I started but he cut me off.

"Yeah..."

My heart pounded wildly as my hand reached to open it. Just as my fingertips brushed against the lid of the box, he finished his sentence and I froze on the spot.

"...it's for Mia-chan…"

My lips twitched as my gaze trailed up slowly until our eyes met.

"What?" I blurted out in disbelief.

He ruffled his hair again and his eyes were darting around nervously.

"It's her birthday today, right?" he asked which I nodded slowly and he continued, "So I thought I should prepare a present for her. Since I've only talk to her once, I thought it might be good if you could hand this to her and you're her best friend too."

I closed my eyes and heaved a long silent sigh. I couldn't believe what I had just heard.

"I-"

Before I could even start my sentence, he grabbed both my shoulders and shook them lightly.

"You will help me, right, Yori-chan?" he pleaded with his deadly puppy eyes.

I blinked twice before heaving another sigh.

"Since you've already used your puppy-eyes attack, I guess I've no choice but to help you," I said with a small smile.

He flashed his usual cheerful smile before giving me a bear hug.

"Yori-chan is the best! Thank you!" he thanked happily and I patted his back but my heart was already aching badly.

"Of course, I'm your good friend, remember?" I reminded after we broke the hug and I waved the present at him.

"I'll pass this to her after school."

-------------------------------------------------------------------

After I've handed the present to Mia, she told me to head home first since she had something on that day.

Bidding goodbye to her, I was walking passed a few empty classrooms when I heard some whisperings in one of the classrooms. Feeling curious, I walked towards the back door and peeked out through the windows. It was Yuuri and Ryosuke. My eyebrows furrowed upon the sight.

What are the two of them doing in this empty classroom after school?

While I was busy listing all the possible reasons, their voices became slightly louder and I decided to eavesdrop by leaning my back against the door.

"Chii, are you really sure of continuing this?" Ryosuke asked with hint of worry.

"Yeah, I'm sure. You don't have to worry for me, Yama-chan."

My heart leaped when I heard his cheerful voice again. Then I heard Ryosuke heaving a heavy sigh.

"You should know that Yoriko-chan has some feelings for you..."

My heart began to beat faster and heat was creeping its way up my cheeks.

"…and she will definitely get hurt in the end if she knows that your ulterior motive of getting close to her is because of your feelings for her best friend, Mia-chan."

Something had shattered. The place was so quiet and I heard it clearly.

Slowly, my right hand reached out and clutched tightly at the spot where the pain grew stronger each second. Droplets of tears fell and dampened the cold hard floor. His reply came along and made me broke into sobs.

"I...I'll find a way to tell her after Mia-chan gives me her reply. I've written a confession letter and placed it inside the present. So I guess she will be giving her reply soon."

Cupping my other hand over my mouth, I tried to muffle my sobbing as my heart was throbbing painfully. It felt like it had been stabbed repeatedly before being ripped into a million pieces.

As I continued to sob uncontrollably, the door slammed opened and I looked up just in time to lock eyes with the person I didn't wish to see the most, Chinen Yuuri.

"Yoriko-chan…"

I heard Ryosuke mumbled my name and my stare turned into a glare. I glowered at Yuuri intently, as he walked towards me slowly. Each step he took was like a stab in my heart.

"Yori-chan..," he started while taking another step, advancing towards me slowly.

"I...I can e-explain...," he said quietly with hint of guilt.

Just as his fingers touched my forearm, the feeling of irritation and pain boost immediately and I flunked his hand away.

"Don't touch me," I growled, glaring at him with my redden eyes filled with tears.

As my right hand released its grip from the cloth, a loud echo rang along the hallway. My right hand stung in pain as it hung lifeless at my side.

However, the pain of my hand couldn't be compared to my heart. My heart was a million times more painful than my hand. Ryosuke stared at me, totally stupefied with his eyes wide open. Yuuri held the spot on his cheeks that was now red and looked at me in horror and guilt.

"Yori-chan..," he started again but I cut him off.

"Don't you ever call me with that name again! I hate you!" I shouted with my voice trembling and ran past him, with my hand cupped over my mouth.

"Yoriko! Yoriko!"

I heard him calling my name but I didn't stop. I continued to run until I was panting heavily, soaked in my own perspire and leaned against the wall. Clutching my bag closely to me, I hugged it tightly as I cried all my pain out.

"Yoriko, where are you?!"

It was his voice. I cupped my hand over my mouth for the third time and tried to muffle my sobbing. I didn't want to see him. His face, his smile, his voice, just everything about him irked me now.

Few minutes had passed and I heard his voice faded away which I guessed he had headed off to somewhere else. Releasing my hand, tears ran down my cheeks again. Closing my eyes, my mind replayed all the memories from the day we started to become good friends.

I thought I stood a chance.

I’d never guessed that your motive of becoming good friends with me was to get near to Mia-chan.

You're so cruel, Chinen Yuuri. I shouldn’t fall for you in the first place if I knew you would destroy my heart.

As I opened my eyes once again, I looked up at the blue sky with the sun shining brightly on my face, drying up my tears.

From this moment onwards, I've given up on you completely, Chinen Yuuri.

#3:

"Ne Yuna-chan," I called out and she turned to look at me.

"Are you going to look for a job during the summer holidays?" I asked and she nodded.

"Un! I have to find one! I'm trying hard to save up money to buy that earpiece I told you last week, remember?" she answered with a smile.

I nodded and placed both of my shoes in the shoes rack. Grabbing my bag and books from the floor, the both of us headed for our classroom.

"What about you, Yuu-chan?" she asked while staring at me innocently.

I blushed at the pet name and nudged her arm lightly.

"Yuna-chan!" I scolded lightly.

“I told you not to call me with that pet name! Others might get the wrong idea!"

As usual, she laughed at my reaction before poking my cheeks.

"Yuu-chan is just too cute!" she teased loudly and my cheeks flushed into a darker shade of red.

"Yuna-chan!" I cried out softly in embarrassment.

"Your reaction is just too cu-"

She stopped her sentence mid-way and her expression changed just as we turned in at the corner.

"Yuu-chan, look out!" she shouted quickly but it was too late.

Bang!

Before I knew, I landed on the cold hard floor and my books were scattered everywhere.

"Ouch..," I groaned, rubbing my bottom while my eyes were still shut tightly.

"Yuu-chan! Are you alright?" Yuna asked worriedly, squatting down beside me.

I opened my eyes and nodded slightly but my bottom was still sore.

"I'm sorry for not warning you earlier. Do you know that you've actually bumped into-"

Again, she stopped mid-way with her gaze fixed on something nearby and her mouth fell apart slightly.

"Are you alright?"

A calming voice asked and I froze.

That voice. Don't tell me it's him. If it's really him, Yuna is going to be so dead later.

Turning my head, my gaze trailed up slowly and I found myself staring into another pair of dark brown orbs. It belonged to the most popular guy in the entire school, Nakajima Yuto.

My eyes widened and my mouth fell apart. I tried to answer his question but instead, I started to stammer badly while avoiding his stare.

"I-I...I..."

As if something was jammed in my throat, I couldn't speak at all. My heart was pounding wildly against my chest that it started to ache and my cheeks were burning hot.

My face must be in beet red now.

I heard his chuckles and stared up at him. I blushed harder at the sight of him chuckling with his fist covering his mouth.

He's just way too cute, flawless and perfect.

"Take my hand," he instructed gently and I followed, not daring to stare directly into his eyes.

After I had regained my posture, I brushed away the dirt on my skirt and realized that Yuna was carrying my bag.

"Here, these are your books," he said as he handed me the books that his friend, Yamada Ryosuke, had passed to him.

"Thank you, Nakajima-kun, Yamada-kun," I thanked, bowing slightly.

"And I'm sorry for bumping into you earlier. I wasn't looking at where I was going," I added with an apologetic look.

Quickly, he waved his hands and shook his head.

"No, no, it should be me. It was my fault. I'm sorry," he apologized as well and bowed slightly.

While we were trying to take the responsibility of the incident, a soft feather-like voice spoke.

"Yuto-kun?"

It grabbed the attention of everyone and I turned around too. It was Yuto's girlfriend, Nanoka Asa. My heart sank instantly and I dropped my gaze. Taking my bag from Yuna, I clutched onto my books tightly and turned around on my heels when his voice rang again.

"Your name...is Aikawa Yuuka, right?"

Immediately, my heart skipped a beat.

Oh my god! He knows my name!

Turning around, I nodded with a small smile. To my surprise, he flashed my favourite smile and I could feel heat creeping up my cheeks again.

"I see. So I've finally met someone with the same pet name as me," he said gently with the warm smile still plastered across his face.

Before I could reply, his girlfriend called him for the second time.

"Yuto-kun!"

He gave a nod in her direction and averted his gaze back to me.

"I've to go now. See you around in school then. Ja!" he waved and excused himself.

I watched as his girlfriend linked her arm around his and my gaze lingered at his back view until they turned in at the corner.

Turning around, my lips were set into a grim line and the both of us continued to walk towards the classroom silently.

Although we're studying in the same school with our classrooms on the same level, I could rarely see you or have a chance to talk to you.

I let out a silent sigh.

You're so close yet unreachable.

#4:

“I see…so she’s your girlfriend,” the girl mumbled softly and Ryosuke nodded.

The girl heaved a sigh and nodded lightly.

“I understood. The both of you looked really compatible. I wish for the both of you to last long. Goodbye,” she bided and ran off.

As soon as she was out of sight, Ryosuke released his grip on my hand and laced both his fingers together before placing them behind his head. My heart sank slightly and I decided to brush off the feeling.

“So how long are you going to deceive these girls?” I asked loudly and Ryosuke slapped one of his hands hard against my mouth.

“Shhhhh! Don’t speak so loudly! Are you trying to expose me?” he hissed softly and looked around before dragging me to somewhere quiet.

I rolled my eyes and slapped away his hand. Sitting down, I rubbed my mouth to ease the pain which he had slapped slightly harder earlier.

“Honestly speaking, even though I’m your best friend since childhood days, I still don’t understand why you refused to accept those girls who confessed to you,” I said and brushed my hands against the soft grass.

“Some of them are really quite compatible with you.” I added with slight frown.

Hearing that, he leaned closer to me that made me cringed and whispered softly in my ear.

“Someone else has stolen heart away before I entered into this school.”

My eyes widened as I turned to look at him. He gave me a slight nod and flashed the smile that I adored the most. I returned a smile and lowered my gaze on my hands.

Someone else has stolen his heart before he even entered this school?

Just then, a dim of hope lit up within me and a smile was adorned on my lips.

“Oh? Who is it? Is it someone from Junior High?” I asked casually with hint of happiness while fiddling with my fingers.

From the corner of my eyes, I caught him shaking his head. I tilted my head to side and frown again.

If it isn’t someone from High School and Junior High, it couldn’t be someone from Elementary right? Not even speaking of before Elementary school.

In the midst of my thoughts, I felt him shifted closer to me and snapped out of it.

“Do you really wish to know who the person is?” he asked while staring at me intently.

With our gaze locked together, I felt myself lost within his dark brown eyes. Unconsciously, I nodded and gulped. I watched as a smile was painted across his lips and he broke away from the gaze.

“Do you still remember Reiko-san?” he asked as his gaze was set on me once again.

I frowned slightly while I tried to recall about the person.

Reiko-san? Isn’t that Kazuya-kun’s older sister?

My eyes widened as I stared back at him.

“You mean Kazuya-kun’s older sister?” I gasped softly and he nodded with a soft chuckle.

“Yeah, that’s her,” he admitted and stood up from his place.

“I’ve no idea how it ended up like this but I guessed I started to feel this way after I bumped into her at the streets near our house while I was on my way home after soccer training in the last year of Junior High,” he confessed.

As he turned to the side, I caught a glimpse of the smile he had never shown anyone before, including me. My heart sank instantly and I looked away.

How can this be? As far as I had remembered, he only met Kazuya-kun’s older sister once and that was when we went to his house to complete our school project. And now, he fell straight for her after he met her for the second time.

I bit my lips hard as tears began to fill at the corner of my eyes and I tried to blink them away. Suddenly, I felt his warmth against my shoulder again.

“Why are you so quiet all of a sudden?” he asked and tried to take a peek at my face.

“Are you laughing at me for liking someone older?” he whined softly and I looked up just in time to see him pout.

Though my heart was already throbbing in pain, I couldn’t help but to chuckle whenever I see him pouting his lips.

He’s just too adorable to resist.

I poked his cheeks before ruffling his hair lightly and shook my head with a smile.

“Nope, I’m not laughing at you. It doesn’t matter if the person is older than you or taller than you. As long as you’re true about her, that’s all it matters,” I said with a sad smile and stared down at my feet.

Just then, I felt his body moved closer against mine and before I knew, he hugged me tightly.

“Thank you, Ryoko! I knew you would support me! You’re truly my best friend!” he exclaimed happily and snuggled against my shoulder.

I heaved a silent sigh and pressed my lips together.

Best friend uh? I guess I can never be more than just your best friend.

Before I knew, Sakura petals were fluttering down slowly as the breeze came by and blew them away. I looked down to see a Sakura petal lying softly against my palms. It was already in the colour of a faded pink. Heaving another sigh, I looked up at the sky and closed my eyes.

Why can’t you realize it?

I love you, my best friend.

I love you, Yamada Ryosuke.

#5:

“Mizu-chan, are you going to pass him the letter?” my best friend, Nana, asked.

I shrugged my shoulders and heaved a long sigh. Grabbing both my shoulders, she shook them lightly while I stared at her grumpily.

“You should do it, Mizu-chan. It’s your chance now!” she said firmly with a serious expression but it made me even more depressed.

“I…I don’t know, Nana-chan. What if I’m rejected straight in the face by him? Isn’t that awkward?” I asked, thinking about the scene and shook my head roughly.

“Eh? Well, that would be really awkward I guess. Oh! Why don’t you place it in his shoe locker? That should work!” she said excitedly and my eyes widened.

Oh yeah, shoe locker! Why haven’t I thought of that? How dumb can I get?

I nodded and flashed a smile.

“I’ll put it in his shoe locker after school.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------

“Okamoto…Keito…where’s it?” I mumbled softly to myself as I searched high and low for his shoe locker.

Just as I was on the verge of giving up, I caught his name on one of the lockers from the corner of my eyes and shifted over.

“Ah! Found it!” I squealed softly and looked around to make sure that there was no one nearby.

Holding onto the handle firmly, I was about to pull it open when I heard some whispering nearby and froze on the spot. Leaning my back against the row of lockers, I pressed my lips together and focused my attention on the whisperings.

“Ne, have you heard that Keito-kun has a girlfriend?” one of the girls asked and the other girl gasped softly.

“Are you serious? Hadn’t he been refusing all the confessions?” the other girl asked.

“Yeah but someone from his class told me that he had recently confessed to a girl from another high school and they were seen holding hands in at the nearby train station.”

Hearing that, my heart sank immediately. I released my grip on the handle and stared at the letter in my hand. Something told me that I should keep the letter with myself first and I did.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day, while I was walking with Nana to the usual place where we would have our lunch, she spotted Keito and his friends walking along the same hallway and nudged my arm lightly.

“Mizu-chan, it’s Keito and his friends. I think they are teasing him about something,” she whispered softly and I took a glance at them before lowering my gaze.

We stopped talking and paid attention to whatever they were talking about.

“Oh, Keito, how’s your date yesterday?” one of his friend teased.

“What how? It’s nothing,” he replied and all of his friends laughed.

“Don’t lie, Keito. We stalked you yesterday. We saw you enjoying yourself while smiling so happily with her,” another guy said and laughed.

I felt Nana’s stare on me and I shook my head.

“I’m fine. Let’s go,” I said and brushed past them quickly.

After they were out of sight, Nana held my wrist and stopped me.

“Are you sure you’re alright, Mizu-chan?” she asked worriedly and I nodded.

Looking up, I flashed a smile at her.

“Yeah, I’m really fine. Let’s hurry up. I’m famished,” I hushed and the sound of my stomach growling could be heard.

Upon settling down at our usual spot, we began to tuck in our bentos. Stuffing a piece of vegetable into my mouth, I couldn’t help but to heave a silent sigh.

Luckily, I didn’t place my letter into his shoe locker yesterday. Or else, it will be the biggest joke ever.

Swallowing the bite in my mouth, I stuffed another piece of meat and began to chew slowly.

After a few days, I’ll be alright. He’s not the only guy on Earth. I’ll definitely find someone else who’ll return my feelings and love me dearly.

I will send my best regards to you and your girlfriend to last long, Keito-kun.
