The sound of John's footsteps down the hall is slower than normal. He opens the room door, and without speaking, goes to the locked drawer where he puts his gun. He closes it up, and just stands there, staring at nothing

Long enough for Erica to wonder if she was hearing things. She had been giving Madeline a warm bath in the kitchen sink, and she finishes, wrapping her in a towel and taking her to the nursery. Getting a diaper on her, she kisses her belly, dresses her in a onesie, and makes her way out to the living room again. When she sees John, she frowns softly.

"John? You okay?"

John looks up, tries to give her a smile.

"I'm...I'm okay. How are you and Maddie?" He sounds wrecked.

"You're not okay," Erica says, knowing it instantly. She reaches out and takes his hand, leading him carefully to the couch and sitting him down.

"What happened today?"

He closes his eyes and leans his head back.

"There was a new arrival today, from a really shitty place. I was the first living, non-zombie person she'd seen in months. Why bring her here, if she has to go back to that?"
