“I don’t get it, this is totally pointless!”

Four heads turn to look at Wally as the speedster’s voice breaks the relative silence of the living room. He’s been pacing angrily back and forth in front of the television screen for the past twenty-three minutes, disappearing into nothing but a frenetic yellow blur; even from his place by the door, Kaldur can see that the carpet’s been worn down to the stone flooring beneath it.

“Oh yeah?” Artemis prompts, “And what should we be doing instead?” She’s sitting at the kitchen counter, her back to them as she cleans the array of arrows laid out on the granite in front of her. Despite how apathetic she sounds, the set of her shoulders and her tense, jerky movements are enough to show that she’s just as on edge as Wally.

The speedster gapes at her openly before glowering. “Well, I don’t know, how about actually looking for him instead of sitting around here doing nothingAs Wally starts to yell, Kaldur takes that as his cue to interrupt. “We have our orders to stay here,” he says, pushing ( ... )

Wally doesn’t answer, gritting his teeth instead, and so Kaldur steps in once more. “Artemis is right. Even if we managed to locate Robin, there isn’t anything we would be able to do,” he says. It’s a struggle to keep his voice as calm and neutral as possible when his own frustration is threatening to overwhelm him. Knowing that a member of their team - their youngest and most vulnerable, no less - is missing and they have no way of helping is unbearable.

He sighs heavily and crosses his arms. “Batman would not have ordered us to stay behind if he didn’t think it was absolutely necessary. We all know that the Joker is beyond the abilities of our team. If we interfered, it would only make matters worse,” he continues, keeping his eyes on the ground because none of them can stand to look at each other right now - the self-deprecating atmosphere in the room is almost palpable.

“But- we can’t just- Kaldur, it’s Robin,” Wally says adamantly, and now the anger is gone and he’s desperate. “Not some random civilian or- or hostage. Robin. We ( ... )

All at once, Kaldur feels drained and exhausted. He’s crossing the room to the other armchair when Superboy straightens up, suddenly rigid and attentive. “Look,” he demands, sounding both hopeful and apprehensive a the same time.

Kaldur follows his gaze to the television, where a breaking news info-graphic has appeared next to the anchorwoman. The headline on the bottom of the screen reads ‘VIDEO TAPE RECEIVED’ - as he watches, it’s updated with the tagline ‘CONFIRMED TO BE FROM JOKER’.

“You don’t think-?” Wally starts but then cuts himself off. It’s an unnecessary question - they’re all thinking it.

At once, Kaldur changes directions, going instead to the coffee table to grab the remote. He dials up the volume, and as he does so, it’s impossible not to notice how all of them are collectively holding their breath.

The anchorwoman is in mid-speech once the volume is audible. Kaldur sets the remote back down, perching on the arm of the couch next to Superboy.

“-delivered by a masked man who would not identify himself but claimed ( ... )

Oh, who am I kidding? If events play out the same way as they did in that clip, I'm gonna be shaking and crying by the end of this fic. Why you make me feel like this, writer!anon? (but I love you for it)

When the image flickers to life, they’re greeted with the sight of Robin tied to a chair. A metal bar is pressed against his throat; the man holding it is standing behind him, and even in the dim lighting, his red grin is unmistakable. Looking at it sends a shiver through Kaldur, one that runs deeper when the man speaks. His voice is high and reedy, the sound of nails on a chalkboard, and it chills Kaldur to the bone.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen of Gotham!” he exclaims, “I interrupt this program to bring you tonight’s entertainment - an inside interview with the one and only Boy Wonder!”Wally is leaning forward in his chair, hands clutching at the armrests. There’s something akin to horror on his face, one that’s echoed in the rest of their expressions as well. Kaldur is still having trouble breathing properly; he finds that he can’t tear his eyes away from the screen, watching as the bar against Robin’s throat is jerked upwards, causing the boy to gag and gasp for air ( ... )

“Batman is nothing like you!” he shouts, and Kaldur feels a sinking sensation in his stomach. If there’s ever been a time that Robin’s stubbornness may get him killed, it’s now. Judging from the groan that Artemis lets out, she’s thinking the same thing.

The Joker, however, only laughs. He walks around to the side of the chair, twirling the crowbar in one hand. The other one comes to rest on Robin’s head where it strokes the boy’s hair. Robin pulls back from the touch as if burned.

“Feisty and loyal!” the Joker crows, and then he smacks Robin across the face with the back of his hand. It makes a sharp cracking noise, and the boy’s head whips to the side ( ... )

“Will it make a difference?” Robin drawls, voice dripping with sarcasm. Artemis hisses a word that sounds like ‘stupid’.

The Joker pauses before shrugging. “No, not really. But what can I say? I’m curious!”

Robin scoffs, lip curling as the Joker slides an arm around his shoulders, leaning closer as if they’re conspirators in some grand scheme together. “Now tell me... Why do you follow Batman? What is so great about this masked vigilante that convinced a kid like you to parade around in tights and a cape, playing cops and robbers? Please, the folks at home are just dying to know!”

Robin is silent, and for a moment Kaldur thinks he’s going to be too stubborn to play along. But then he answers, speaking with such honest devotion and faithfulness that Kaldur has to clench his eyes shut against the sudden wave of anguish that washes over him.

“Because he’s a hero. He’ll do whatever it takes to protect this city - things that no one else would be able to do,” Robin says, voice laced with an almost religious conviction. “He’s given up ( ... )

“Robin-” Wally says brokenly, and Kaldur reaches out to clasp his arm, because even now he’s still their leader and he needs to hold them together, even though he can barely keep himself standing, and maybe he’s clutching onto his teammates to hold himself together instead. He feels powerless and weak, useless, and Robin still isn’t making a sound ( ... )

Oh God, I think I stopped breathing for an an entire two minutes or something, and I've never been able to get past a minute. XD You're seriously THAT good, oh my God. Ide. Just.

Robiiiiin. :( And oh, the team. I think if I were in their position, I would've burst out of the room to find Rob, but the way you write it makes it seem as though that were impossible. D': Cannot wait for the next update; you are amazing.

THIS. LINE.
I was holding it together for the most part but then- this. I just. I burst into tears.

I feel like the torture's only going to get worse from here on out... :(

Oh oh dear goodness at "that’s all Kaldur needs to know that the boy’s accepted what’s going to happen." i actually felt my stomach drop a bit & at more then one point reading the teams reactions i just had to close my eyes!!!
This is amazing, twisting the Red hood scene in to Young Justice with a Dark Knight back story! i mean really! i would have never thought to twist these universes like this but it works flawlessly truly great work i cant wait for the rest!!!!!
