God it hurt so bad.
He had fallen so young, so terribly young and in such a way the scars on the heart never healed properly. That day started so normal and happy that they never imagined the nightmare they would wake up to. Like a phantom, he was there one minute and gone the next. Three months, four days, twelve hours, thirty seven minutes and forty one... forty two... forty three seconds they had found him.
His broken body.
Too late. Always too late. Why, why, why?
Like an animal run over on the street, they found him, beaten and broken. The blood was long dried and the stench of death fouled up the air. There was no dignity, no peace, just a cruel ending.
None of them had coped well. There had to be several interventions by friends and family members. Too many sleepless nights (NOOO! But then there are times when he runs out of things to think about, and it always goes back to Dick. Always. Wally thinks about all the mistakes they made on the mission, every possible route they could have - should have - taken so that they all got out alive, blaming himself for not thinking about it sooner, for being too slow, for not being there for him. He thinks about all the things he should have said to him, all the things he should have done with him, wondering how he could be so scared or so selfish when he was his best friend. And all he can do is sit down and cry because he misses Dick so damn much ( ... )
