So let's say either when Dick first gets adopted by Bruce or when he's fresh meat a freshman, some rich brat wants to be a big shot and says something along the lines of, "Of course, Bruce Wayne would adopt a circus freak" nice and loud and pointed and within ear-shot. And Dick, because he's just as much of a brat thankyouverymuch, does a few consecutive back handsprings down the hall (maybe with an airborne sommersalt thrown in somewhere), lands next to him/her all nonchalant and tells him/her, "I'm not ashamed of where I came from" and then walks away... on his hands.

Even years after the fact, it's still a huge deal that Bruce Wayne -- one of the richest men in the world, the prince of Gotham City, and philandering philanthropist extraordinaire -- takes in what most of Gotham's high society could only describe as a common circus freak. Even for Bruce, who had been known for his eccentricities ever since he had reappeared in Gotham almost a decade ago, it had been a strange decision. After all, shady mistresses, smashed luxury cars, and billion dollar birthday parties that culminated in what would have been simply called arson if anyone else had done it were all such temporary things if enough money and power was thrown around.

"Did he say to play nice to poor, little scholarship students as well?" Elizabeth simpers, pointing over to where Bette Kane is giving the newest addition to Gotham Academy's student body her usual welcome speech.

Conrad and Jordan, unsurprisingly, leer at the new girl and the way her legs stretch on and the graceful sway of her hips. Her skin is tanner than Catherine and any of her little friends, and her figure is a lot fuller as well even when covered by the school's blazer.

Mathias is glad he hasn't been caught staring like Conrad is, once his best friend has promptly been smacked in the arm by a jealous Margaret.

"What?" Conrad scowls, pulling away from his girlfriend. Catherine glances over at Mathias and rolls her eyes and he remembers her ranting a few days prior about how the couple's relationship had been "on the rocks" for most of the summer.

"She's from Gotham North," Margaret hisses, and Mathias imagines her little manicured nails turning into claws. Her face is a mixture of fury and jealousy that's very ( ... )

Shit because it's Richard Grayson who just backflipped over to him, Richard Grayson who just somersaulted over his head, Richard Grayson who probably just heard everything he's said. Mathias Williamson isn't frightened of some little kid who probably still hasn't hit puberty yet -- but he is scared of some little kid who has the richest man in Gotham behind him.

"You know," Grayson says -- and what the hell, the guy's practically breathing down his neck -- "you and your friends keep saying 'circus freak' this and 'circus freak' that, like I'm supposed to be ashamed of the fact that I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth." His voice is playful, mocking, as if he knows something the rest of them don't, and then he goes and outright cackles in Mathias' ear ( ... )

That was a most excellent fill! I think Dick's responses were fantastic, and his little revenge was so amazing and so very him. The 'vidious' thing was particularly perfect.

He is a troll, and we all adore him for it. I don't think it was too much at all, I think it was exactly the level/kind of retaliation he'd go for.

"Invidious", which basically means mean. I was going with the idea of "in" meaning "not", as in "insignificant" :) Hope that helps.
