Prompt Post - Part Ten

Mar 11, 2012 17:03

I am REALLY, REALLY SORRY about taking so long, guys, and about not being around much recently. I've been busier than I have in a while, and it just kept slipping my mind between uni applications and volunteering and all sorts- for some reason I thought we were much further off a new post.

If there is anything I haven't responded to, as of now, I'm ( Read more... )

the angst of growing up anonymous March 14 2012, 00:21:46 UTC
Can we get some 5+-years-from-now angst? Like, the YJ getting older, making the transition from sidekick to superhero, dealing with deaths and loss and the sacrifice of choosing crime fighting over a chance at a normal life.

Example:

Wally becoming The Flash after Barry's death.

Dick fighting with Bruce and running off to Bludhaven to become Nightwing.

Roy going from drug addict to father.

Artemis dealing with the idea of loosing her friends-turned-family after the YJ dismantles.

Superboy struggling with life as a normal kid.

Ect.

You can make any deaths, pairings, struggles or storylines that you wish. Just so long as it's a few years down the line.

A/N: I'm going to work through the main seven. These will be in one-shot fashion, although all of them will be grounded in the same future. It takes places more than five but less than ten years down the line.

B07: Artemis Crock

"OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD DON'T DROP ME PLEASE!"

"Are you still more afraid of the Scarecrow?" Beneath her all-concealing cowl, Artemis had to fight the urge to grin. She wouldn't be able to keep convincing dropping her voice a few octaves if she was smiling.

Artemis let the gangster slip a little further out the third story window. "Are you?!"

"NO! NOOO!"

"Good. Remember that, Rico, because you're going to go back to your boss--"

"OH GOD NO!"

"--and tell him... and all your friends... about me"Wh-who are you ( ... )

Once their bowls were cleaned, but before they could talk strategy, Mother wheeled into the next room. "I've been working on something special for you girls."

Artemis glanced at her sister, but Jade had no clue.

It turned out to be a suit.

A Bat suit.

"It seems we need to put the fear of the Devil into our enemies," Mom said.

"No!" Artemis shouted. "Absolutely not!"

"He's not coming back," Jade said. "If he'd survived Doomsday, he'd have shown up already."

"He survived."

"Then where is he?"

"The walls could have ears, girls."

"It's not ours to wear," Artemis continued. Because God alone knew how Barbara would react, someone stealing that identity from her. "Besides, neither of us look the part. Unless we're supposed to start dyeing our hair?"

Jade said, "I think that's why Mom has the mask cover the face and hair, sis. And anyway, who cares? The Batgirl's been gone for years."

"Not by choice."

"We don't have the luxury of respecting your colleague's wishes," Mom said ( ... )

Oh wow. No Man's Land. Loved that arc. Can't wait to see where else this will go.

B06. Red Arrow

"Speedy."

Mia looked up from her crossbow, screwdriver in her off-hand. Castoff glow from the sodium-vapor street lights down below lent her sunken cheeks a jaundiced look. Her backup weapon had been twigging her for days and she wouldn't stop fiddling with it.

"You feeling okay?"

A nod. "Sure, bossman. Little rough around the edges, but I'm still game."

Roy took her word for it. Mia was always honest, and never anything but straightforward. Which was more than the other female archer he knew could claim.

Roy raised his binoculars. At a street-corner two blocks down, the same punks they'd been camping on for the last hour were still joking amongst themselves, huddling together against the stiff winter wind. The glow of their cigarettes, their fourth or fifth each so far, spoke to their culpability. Nobody would waste tobacco like that with rationing the way it was. Not unless they had a lot of disposable cash and good connections ( ... )

Roy just had a Kaldur moment there.

MIA! AND BATWOMAN!

This continues to be brilliance incarnate.

B05. Miss MartianThe flamethrower's output enveloped M'gaan, and she still couldn't help but flinch even as the flames curled harmlessly around her. The forcefield belt she wore had saved her life again. An instant later she was on the move again, smashing a TK-enchanced fist into the OMAC's chest plate and then ripping it off ( ... )

"Mannheim failed to get the goods."

Miss Li, supreme leader of Intergang, reclined in her high-backed leather chair, delicate chin hovering above steepled fingers. "Yes. That was the plan."

Whisper A'Daire had suspected as much. Mannheim might not have thought much about their new boss, an ex-lieutentant from the Black Mask's outfit in Gotham, but Whisper wasn't an idiot. Li wasn't anyone's lackey. The old guard dismissing her had allowed the woman to clean house, and now Whisper was the only one in a position to stop the inevitable:

One of Li's kind taking over Intergang ( ... )

B04. Superboy

There was a gravestone in Smallville's cemetery, a slate of polished black marble standing vigil over a well-maintained plot of green earth.

It read:

CONNER KENT
Beloved Friend and Son

And nothing more.

*eyes growing wider, and wider, and wider, and...*

He's... dead? Or something happened that makes him as good as dead?

ARE YOU REALLY NOT GOING TO TELL US WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM?!?!?!

Oh no. Wally's next. Then Kaldur, and finally Robin... BUT THE SITUATIONS ARE GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE!

I figured at least one of them had to be dead by this point, given they lead pretty violent lives and this story is set in the aftermath of 'Doomsday' . (Three guesses as to what that calamity was, and the first two don't count.) Plus, I liked the idea of M'gaan becoming the new Supergirl as a kind of living memorial to him and Superman.

(And don't forget Zatanna!)

At least you told us what happened to him.

I really like this idea too. M'gann has grown very powerful - maybe not to her full potential yet, but she's strong enough to pull it off.

I keep forgetting that Zatanna's not a 'guest' anymore. Which would make her B08, and who you should have started with, going by this order. What are you saving her for?

I didn't know where in the order to put her, as she doesn't seem to have an official non-guest designation yet, so I just went with sticking her in the second half of the story. Robin will still be the last entry.

Yup, M'gann isn't the glass cannon she once was.
