Prompt Post - Part Ten

I am REALLY, REALLY SORRY about taking so long, guys, and about not being around much recently. I've been busier than I have in a while, and it just kept slipping my mind between uni applications and volunteering and all sorts- for some reason I thought we were much further off a new post.

If there is anything I haven't responded to, as of now, I'm ( Read more... )

[ Repost - Part IX ] Nightwing + Billy Batson anonymous March 13 2012, 00:44:53 UTC
Original prompt: "I'm not sure why, but I just imagined Nightwing taking in Billy Batson and raising him.
Because why not.

Wally/Dick on the side would be pretty cool but whatever guys just run with this seriously"

Because even flying isn't better than riding Dick's RNight-cycle.

Nightwing is amazingly in character. Oh, Billy, Nightwing's not going to let you get mixed up in the social services system again. He's been there. He knows how bad it gets. Hell, they sent him to juvie because they couldn't find a foster home for him.

He'll take care of you.

I SHALL WAIT PATIENTLY FOR AN UPDATE!

wait wait wait when did Dick Grayson go to juvie

did I miss something

I mean I'll be the first to admit I'm no canon expert on him but seriously I'd have thought that would have come up at some point in my research

how did I not know this

(also hee thank you for the kind words, I'll update as frequently as I can)

iirc, in comics canon Dick was sent to Juvie after his parents died because all the social services was full he proceeded to get beaten up a couple of times before he was sent to a catholic orphanage where Bruce found him sometimes later.

ah okay that makes waaaaaaaay more sense thank you

I haven't read the comics for the most part but I tried to at least get enough background information to write convincingly. apparently most sites just skip straight to the part where he gets adopted by Bruce and lives happily ever after...HOW HELPFUL OF THEM

np! The Batman wiki ( http://batman.wikia.com/wiki/Batman_Wiki ) is a wonderful resource if you're ever in need of character info. :D It's were I usually end up going most the time when I'm reading comics and come across something I haven't heard about or don't understand. ^_^

Well, it happens in only one continuity, so I'm not really surprised most people don't know about it. Bruce was going through all the paperwork related to taking in a ward, which was difficult given his playboy reputation and apparently back then, taking in a ward involved a lot more hassle than it does now. During that time, Dick got passed around social service, they couldn't find space for him in a foster home, so they put an eight year-old (or ten; not really sure how old he was in that continuity when he lost his parents. I mean, he was twelve in All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder) in juvie. (Makes for a lot of interesting, and frankly terrible, possibilities as to what can happen to a cute little orphan boy in the same cell as a bunch of convicted 15/16 year-olds.) Yes, that was clearly better than him living with a certified playboy ( ... )

b-baaaaw oh Dick you poor thing. come here and let me hug you.

(although that whole backstory actually sounds remarkably similar to Billy Batson's in the DC Animated Showcase that had him and Superman in it. although instead of juvie he was sent to a home for "troubled children" before he ended up on the streets.)

anyway yes NO MORE STREET SUFFERING you both have homes now okay, okay, everyone hug and be happy ;;

Eh, DC doesn't always get points for creativity.

Exhibit A:
Dick Grayson's mother? Mary Grayson.
Wally West's mother? Mary West.
Bruce Wayne's mother? Martha Wayne
Clark Kent's mother? Martha Kent

And do we really need to go into all the John/J'onn/Jon(s)?

I think the YJ show actually made a joke out of all the Johns. Or I took it as one lol

This Isn't Kindness – Flashback/Interlude anonymous March 21 2012, 22:52:25 UTC
Nightwing hadn't even made it to the end of the street with the kid in tow before a low, sultry voice called out to stop him:

"Hey, big guy. Love the suit. Just where exactly are you going, on a night like this?"

Nightwing turned around, still holding the kid carefully in his arms. He kept his expression neutral as he surveyed the speaker. The woman looked to be around his age, maybe a little older, but there was something hardened and weary lurking in her face beneath the heavy layers of dark makeup. She was smiling widely, lips coated candy red, and Nightwing supposed that it was probably meant to be seductive. The expression didn't reach her eyes.

"I haven't seen you around here before," the woman drawled, twisting her frame a bit so that her whole body was facing him. She had an attractive figure, but the kindest thing Nightwing could say about her outfit was that it certainly conveyed the…message, she was trying to send ( ... )

He didn't have to take the kid back to Blüdhaven. He really didn't have to.

But Dick wasn't a monster. Even without factoring in his identity as Nightwing, his role as a superhero, he knew deep down that nobody with even a shred of human decency would be able to just leave Billy Batson the way he'd found him.

And nobody with half a brain would send him back to a system that had turned him out so coldly the first time.

This was ridiculous, though. Even ignoring the fact that Dick couldn't feasibly run around picking up every homeless child he stumbled across, it couldn't be rational to be feeling so impulsive, protective even, over a well-known hero and a certified member of the Justice League. For goodness's sake, the kid was Captain Marvel. The media darling. If he could defend Fawcett City from supervillains every day, he ought to be able to take care of himself. Right ( ... )

Dick knew, in a practical sense, that dragging this kid back home with him was possibly among the worst decisions he could make, for either of their welfares. Blüdhaven was no place for a child. Nightwing didn't need a kid slowing him down during his war on criminal rampancy, and Billy didn't need to worry about the vicious, sadistic villains who operated out of Blüdhaven, the likes of which he'd probably never encountered before in Fawcett.

But Billy did, rather desperately, need a place to live. Along with a reliable source of food. And a guiding hand. And Dick also knew that when he'd been orphaned and desolate and alone, failed by the system and left without a family, the fact that someone had stepped up to take him in had made all the difference in the world - for Richard Grayson as a child, and for Robin as a hero ( ... )

Oh God... Billy! *pulls him into a tight hug*

Billy's so sweet, but such a woobie! Great job writing him, and Nightwing! They both feel incredibly in character!
