Although I ended up posting this second, this image was actually the first I came up with an the one for which I had a more distinct vision. Probably 30 hours of solid work went into this painting, and it's without a doubt the most ambitious piece I've worked on in a long time. For the past few years I've been on a quest to deal with setting, place, surroundings as integral parts of my illustrations and worlds, not just "backgrounds" to showcase the characters, but characters themselves. I think that may have almost been more evident in my other piece, because that piece was far more contingent on mood, but with this image I definitely created an environment which I felt was as well-rounded as I wanted it to be.
