First of all I should begin by saying I really enjoyed The End of Time part 2...
It was a great send off for the Doctor. The plot made a suprising amount of sense, the themes were smart, subtle and in depth. The characterisation was on the whole excellent, the acting was top notch, all in all I thought it was definatly one of the better DR Who episodes and possibly the best final thus far. I have a few complaints though...
The Tenth Doctor had a few too many 'endings' and the side characters too few. I almost blinked and missed what happened to the Master and to the Green Cactus People. Though that could just have been me.
Donna really wasn't used to full effect. I was hoping a bit more from her, I have to confess, and that felt like something of a let down. But... not too bad.
The plot was... good. It wasn't great. It wasn't twisting and turning and intricate, but it was 'good'. Stable and reasonable.
I was kinda suprised that Martha and Micky got married, seemed a bit odd to me. But that was the only one of the endings that seemed a bit incongrous.
And tha's it. For the most part I thought that it was a fun and fast episode. With fantastic writing and better acting. I particually enjoyed Wilf (Who didn't? He made one of the best companions yet!) and the revolation abuot the knocking. That was one of the best scenes thus far, in my opinion. And I think that a lot of Russels themes showed through.
All in all I enjoyed RTD's episode. Mostly because I knew, from the off, that it wouldn't be very good in the way of plot, but that it would be lots of fun in the way of characterisation and theme. And I think this is the key to enjoying RTD. You have to not so much lower, but change your expectations.
A fine send off! Looking forward to the next Doctor, though I think Moffat will have to work hard to fill RTD's boots.
