and not being used to the impact of running can do bad things to your shins. (sometimes it's just at first. sometimes not. probably if you have shin issues the muscles will strengthen up over time and be ok.)
so it may be a combo of 2 things rather than just one thing.
is is the same kind of pain all around?

Yes, it's an almost burning, muscles way too tight kind of pain all around. If I stop and stretch my calves and do that supposed ankle stretch they taught us in gym class where you kind of put your toe on the ground and circle your ankle over it while your weight is on the other foot, it feels better and I can go on.
