1. What are/were your parents’ names?
Inocencio and Nathalie.
2. Where are/were they from?
Papi is from Mexico and Mami was from Louisiana.
3. How did they meet?
I couldn't really say. I like to think it was very romantic, but it probably wasn't.
4. How long were they together before you came along?
A long time, but I don't know exactly. Several years at least.
5. Were you an accident?
Not as far as I know.
6. What did you love most about them growing up?
Well, they were my parents. Are my parents. It's hard to figure out verb tenses in this case. I remember my Mami rubbing my back when I was scared. I think I love that they both took the time to help me be not afraid. My Papi still takes the time.
7. Did/do your parents fight a lot?
Not that I recall.
8. Or did/do they have sex a lot?
How am I supposed to know this? My mother died when I was four!
9. What is the worst argument you ever overheard them having?
I can't think of one.
10. Were/are they affectionate?
I like to think so.
11. What is your favorite memory of them?
Hard to say. My memories are other people's memories, really, things I was told about my Mami, which are different depending on who said what. I like to think I remember them together, maybe on Christmas morning, but I think it's just something I made up.
12. Scenario: You walk into the house and find your parents getting busy on the dining room table. What do you do? What do you think they would do?
This is a ridiculous question. I can't begin to answer it and even if I could, I wouldn't.
13. Were/are your parents hip or lame?
Neither. Those are stupid categories, obviously aimed at fourteen-year-old children.
14. Did/do they ever embarrass you in front of others?
I expect so, but luckily, I don't remember specifics.
15. Which parent wears/wore the pants in the relationship?
My father, I'm sure.
16. Have you ever seen one of them crying?
Yes. I remember my father crying after Mami died.
17. Did/do you ever wish they would get divorced?
Of course not.
18. Were/are they the type to spontaneously dance around the kitchen together or sit quietly in the living room ignoring each other?
Again, stupid categories. I do like to think of them dancing together, though. I have a picture of them dancing at their wedding. My mother is laughing and there's a light inside her that makes the world magic. Papi was so young and handsome, and absolutely besotted. That's the only word to describe the expression on his face. I don't think I've ever seen it in real life.
19. Do you think your parents made you or ruined you?
This is stupid.
