Ok, so it all started with the lure of Hollywood pretty boys. I mean, Robert Downey Jr? Who could say no to that? Plus, Hollywood finally figured out what Japan found out a long time ago. Put in some bromance and you'll get the jousei (older women) all interested in it. I mean, all shoujo mangas nowadays has some hints of shounen-ai in it to capture both the het and slash fangirls. (But is torture to me coz I know it won't go anywhere *pouts*)
Then there was a book sale and I bought the complete novels and short stories of Sherlock Holmes (Still working my way through it though). And that lead me to Sherlock fanfics which were based on the books and movie. Sometime ago, I noticed a category named 'Sherlock (TV)' but I assumed it was based on some of the older shows that was produced a long time ago so I didn't really pay it much attention.
Working my way through the fics, I noticed one fic that involved modern technology, like handphones and laptops and Internet. I stopped reading and went "Hey, the author didn't warn about AU!" but a second story after that had the same elements. That got me thinking. How can two separate authors write two different stories yet set in the same time period and published at the same time? So to quote from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
So I figured that there must have been a new source of fangirling out in the world and the most probable candidate is a TV series. I Google-d it and found out BBC's new 3-parter, 'Sherlock'. It was a fantastic trip, each episode lasting 1.5 hours but you won't feel the length. The pacing was very fast, in fact at the speed Sherlock was speaking at, at times I wished for English subtitles just so I can figure out what he said. He probably beat Gilmore Girls in the speed-speaking competition!
Of course it totally helps that both Sherlock and Watson are total eye-candy. Watson in this case is older than Sherlock, but he shares Sherlock's joy of the hunt. Also, there are a lot of couple-y jokes made at them and by them. And it is so cute when Sherlock spams the detectives' and journalists' handphones at a press conference, heckling their wrong deductions.
Seeing as this is a 3-part standalone, they have introduced all major players in the books, Lestrade, Mycroft and the infamous Moriarty. And yes, it ended in a cliffhanger, thank you very much. There are talks of an actual series due to the popularity of the show, which I hope comes true. I cannot wait for it! Plus, they should cash in on the Sherlock mania while its still hot. Also, Sherlock's actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, reminds me of an older Colin Morgan, Merlin's actor. They have the same unruly dark hair and light coloured eyes. Can't vouch for the size of Benedict's ears though, lol!
Not to spoiler it for anyone, but the third episode is totally the best episode ever for anyone wanting to get their Holmes/Watson fix. The last few minutes was like woah. Gah, when's my next Sherlock fix gonna come?!? Good thing I have the books to tide me over.
