the way max puts it is, she wrote a book while she was at the chateau. That book involved the girl, who was not really the girl she imagined, but in reality was the child with braces on her teeth that she saw in the publisher's office. the waiter, the gardener, the murder, were all part of the book she was writing, part of what she was imagining.
