it's not a voice or footsteps, or any sensory notification that causes taehyung to look up from the book in his lap, an interesting one on different species of insects, and glance toward the door to the adjacent dining room. it’s more of a subconscious feeling, like somehow he just knows someone’s there, and he's unsurprised to meet a familiar gaze.
"yoongi," he says, lacing his voice with fake shock so the other doesn't hear just how used to his presence taehyung has grown, to the point he knows when yoongi’s there without any prior indication. it’s probably not something to be proud of, but taehyung feels proud of it, nonetheless. "what are you doing here?"
“i called upon your father earlier this morning to let him know i was coming.” yoongi smiles, reaches up to brush fingers through his ruby colored hair, and taehyung's forced to pay attention to how attractive the other looks. his attire is always coordinated, matched perfectly, and there's never so much as a hair out of place. of course, that much is probably expected of him, but it always greatly impresses taehyung. "am i not allowed to want to visit a friend?" yoongi says, a pout pulling down his smooth lips.
taehyung grins sheepishly, setting his book on the table beside him and standing from his chair. "of course you are," he says. "but usually there's something... i didn't mean-" he's cut off as yoongi's twinkling laugh fills the room, settling around him like a soft blanket. yoongi always has this effect on him, one that makes taehyung weak in the knees because he likes yoongi so much, one that he used to fight because he felt it was wrong. but then he realized he couldn’t ignore it and he’s now grown rather fond of it. no one else can make him feel this way and there’s some amount of comfort in that.
"i'm just teasing," yoongi says. he strides over and pulls taehyung into a hug. "this time i just came to see you." something about those words makes taehyung's heart race and he pretends to be interested in the gold stitching along the side of yoongi’s coat. “how have you been these days? i’m sorry, i would have visited earlier but i’ve been away most days.”
“it’s understandable,” taehyung shakes his head. he leads yoongi over to the long sofa opposite of the chair he’d been sitting in and they sit down side by side. “don’t worry about it. i was rather busy myself.”
“any news on your sister?” yoongi asks, and taehyung almost smiles because of course yoongi would remember the exact details of their last conversation even when it was two weeks prior to this meeting.
“yes, my father traveled to london and met up with my aunt and uncle and they’ve successfully convinced her not to run away with seokjin,” taehyung explains. “my father thinks he was probably trying to get at our fortune but thankfully my sister had brains enough to write to me before making any rash decisions and the crisis was averted.” taehyung recounts the events from earlier that week and feels relief that the situation had been cleaned up so smoothly. yoongi was the only one with whom he had shared the information as it could easily tarnish his family’s name and reputation. he’s heard of such things happening in lower class families but there was no way he would have let that fate befall the kim family.
“that’s good! very good!” yoongi’s tone is one of relief that mirrors taehyung’s own feelings. “i’m glad that it was able to blow over without more trouble for you. if nothing had been accomplished yet, i would have offered my services, but thank goodness it’s already been dealt with.”
“yoongi...” taehyung blinks gratefully at him. “you know i never could have accepted help from you. i would never dream of burdening someone of your status with such trivial matters.” yoongi pouts at him again and taehyung waves a hand dismissively in front of his face. “anyway, enough about me,” he urges. “how was the hunting expedition? you went at the beginning of the week, am i correct?”
“ah, yes, you are!” yoongi smiles, slinging an arm around taehyung’s shoulder. “the result was quite satisfactory. one of my best yet, even my father had to agree.”
“that’s great,” taehyung smiles back. they continue chatting for a while longer before falling into a comfortable silence and it’s another thing taehyung loves about yoongi, that no silence is ever awkward in his presence. there’s a magical quality to yoongi that makes it impossible for anyone to ever feel uncomfortable around him, whether they’ve just met him or been friends for years.
yoongi picks up the book taehyung had been reading earlier and flips through a few pages before setting it back down. his expression changes suddenly and it surprises taehyung. “actually, now that i think about it, there was something…”
“ah ha!” taehyung exclaims, glaring playfully at the older boy. “i knew there would be! i can see right through you.” yoongi raises his hands in defense and taehyung just laughs. “what is it this time? do you need me to watch your dog again? or do you need my master calligraphy skills? i must confess, i do write some of the nicest letters i’ve ever seen.”
yoongi raises an eyebrow at taehyung. “it’s nothing really. well, my father is throwing a ball in the upcoming weeks and he wants me to invite as many people as possible, since he wants a full house to celebrate the enormous ballroom of our new estate.” taehyung nods to show he follows. “and well… you were the first person i thought of to invite, so i decided i would propose the idea to you.”
“ah, of course i can come!” taehyung agrees readily. “i don’t mind balls, as long as there’s lots of food and dancing isn’t a requirement.” yoongi snorts. “what? you know i don’t dance.”
“taehyung, this is a ball… usually, people dance at balls.” taehyung knows yoongi is right but that doesn’t change his mind and he frowns.
“i hate dancing.”
“is it really that you hate dancing? or is it that you don’t know how to dance?” yoongi smirks and taehyung flushes. “how embarrassing it must be, that the son of one of the richest families in all of korea doesn’t know how to dance. the shame your parents must feel-”
“shut up!” taehyung’s laughing despite himself and he shoves yoongi over on the couch, the other laughing as well.
“yah, is that how you treat a prince?” yoongi reprimands, although there’s no malice in his tone and taehyung just sticks his tongue out.
“i’ll treat a prince however i feel like treating him!” he replies with a lopsided grin.
yoongi narrows his eyes, a grin pulling on his own lips. “fine, be that way.” he stands from the couch and turns back around to face taehyung, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “then as prince, i’m exercising my power over you and i command you to learn ballroom dancing.”
taehyung scrambles up, mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water before he finally stutters, “b-but who could even teach me to dance?” and he clings yoongi’s arm nervously. “i really don’t think this is a good idea...”
“i’ll be the one teaching you.” yoongi reaches up and grabs taehyung’s hand, leads him out of the study, past the dining room, and down the hallway toward the ballroom. “it’s not hard, once you know the steps.” there’s something in the warmth of yoongi’s hand clasped around his own and the tone of yoongi’s voice that makes taehyung believe him.
it’s simple; yoongi leads taehyung slowly, each movement emphasized in order for the younger boy to fully understand it. and taehyung’s not doing too bad, he has to admit, following yoongi step by step so closely that he hasn’t yet looked up from yoongi’s feet the entire time.
“you’re doing very well,” yoongi comments, a pride in his voice that makes taehyung blush. he doesn’t reply though, too focused on making sure he doesn’t lose his place. it’s quiet, aside from the sound of their footsteps and the occasional comment from yoongi.
“you know, jimin and jeongguk are engaged now.” taehyung gasps and almost looks up but reminds himself to focus. “the wedding is planned for the spring. it’s no surprise of course. everyone had been wondering when the two would finally make it official.” it’s true: the two were always far too affectionate with each other to simply continue on being just friends. taehyung makes a mental note to visit and congratulate jeongguk later.
after completing a rather hard step, taehyung can hear yoongi’s smile in his voice. “very good! you’re actually quite a natural at this, taehyung.” taehyung glows at his compliment.
but sooner or later, he knows he has to make a mistake; it comes later when he’s standing close to yoongi, their hands intertwined while yoongi shows taehyung how to twirl and where to place his feet, because the heat of their fingers laced together and yoongi’s eyes shining in the low light of the ballroom are all too distracting and taehyung suddenly can’t remember how to move his feet, tripping over the edge of yoongi’s boot, or maybe himself, he can’t be sure, and tumbling forward onto the unsuspecting yoongi.
there’s a muffled thud as they hit the floor, taehyung’s fall cushioned as yoongi catches him, arms wrapped delicately around his waist. they stare at each other for a moment, taehyung wide-eyed and yoongi’s expression unreadable. taehyung’s arms are pressed down on either side of yoongi and one of his legs is dangerously caught between yoongi’s thighs. they’re both silent, neither dares to speak until taehyung lets out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.
“what… are you thinking right now?” yoongi asks softly, face still so unreadable it makes taehyung’s skin prickle uncomfortably.
“honestly?” taehyung says. he raises one hand, brushes fingers against yoongi’s bottom lip and feels the older boy shiver underneath him. “i’m thinking about how much i want to kiss you.”
“then stop thinking.” in less than a second, yoongi catches taehyung on the mouth, lips molding to fit perfectly against taehyung’s own, and taehyung feel like his heart will stop beating. he kisses back fervently, enjoys the way his stomach twists at the sensation of yoongi’s tongue along his bottom lip. too many times taehyung had imagined what it would be like to kiss yoongi, but not one of his daydreams comes close to the feeling of actually kissing yoongi.
it’s like he’s on fire, skin burning at every light touch of yoongi’s hands on his body. and yoongi’s hands are everywhere: clinging to the front of his jacket, sliding down his arms, braced against his hips, and undoing the buttons of taehyung’s shirt to trace spirals on his chest and collarbones. every touch only makes taehyung kiss yoongi harder.
when they finally pull apart, they stare into each other’s eyes and taehyung thinks he sees something in yoongi’s gaze, a kind of affection he never noticed before that maybe has been there all along, and taehyung was just too busy worrying to see it. he can’t help grinning at the older boy. “i knew i would mess up,” he says triumphantly, as if this mistake was something he was supposed to have made.
yoongi beams at taehyung. “i knew you would, too, at some point.” taehyung stands slowly and then offers a hand to help yoongi up. “well, if it comes down to it, you can always use your unnecessary surplus amount of knowledge on insects to scare away any women who want to dance with you. i’m sure it would work.”
taehyung laughs and nods, leans in closer to yoongi until their foreheads are pressed together. “i love you,” he says suddenly. he savors the way yoongi’s eyebrows raise in surprise, and the way he licks his lips before letting out a deep breath.
“i love you, too,” comes the reply. “i always have.”
taehyung decides there’s no way he’s dancing with anyone besides yoongi at the ball.

yoongi doesn't know how it happened.
one moment he's dressed in his pajamas, laying in his bed, blankets piled up over his head and perfectly intent on spending the whole day sleeping, sleeping, and more sleeping, because that's what you do on a day off, isn't it?
but then the next, taehyung's throwing open the bedroom door and flying through like a whirlwind, stripping off yoongi's blankets, yanking yoongi out of bed, and pulling out clothes for the older to wear in one swift movement, all the while yoongi grumbles sleepily about being unceremoniously awoken and taehyung's just laughing and pinching his cheeks, telling him "come on, hyung! let's go out and have fun today." yoongi doesn't ask where taehyung gets his energy from and he doesn't think he really wants to know.
after throwing on the clothes taehyung prepared and eating a quick breakfast, the two of them take the subway and now, yoongi finds himself standing in an aquarium, large fish tanks looming over him in the dimly lit room. why an aquarium, yoongi wonders, but he knows taehyung won't give him any kind of a legitimate answer, so he instead kicks his feet along the tiled floor and watches taehyung sprint between different tanks excitedly.
"yoongi hyung, look at the jellyfish!" he taps at the glass of one tank and then turns to another. "there are so many colorful fish here, isn't this so cool?"
taehyung's like a little child, so easily entertained and enthusiastic even of small things. it's too cute, yoongi thinks. he follows taehyung to the next room.
"oh wow," taehyung exclaims. "there's a shark here!" he dashes over to watch the large creature swim around, wide eyes sparkling with the reflections of light that bounces off the water. "yoongi hyung!" taehyung turns around and scrunches up his face. "if i were a sea creature, i would be a shark, wouldn't i?" he bares his teeth and more than a shark, he looks like a playful puppy, trying to growl at its master but failing in all aggression because its master only coos at it and praises it for being so cute.
yoongi humors taehyung though, nods and laughs when taehyung beams at him. "yoongi hyung would be…” taehyung walks around, examining different sea creatures. "a sea snail!" he says suddenly and yoongi raises an eyebrow. "because you don't like to move and you're so slow, just like a snail."
"yah," yoongi says, and taehyung laughs loudly, dances around the room as yoongi chases him. "are you making fun of me?"
"maybe just a little~" taehyung sings.
they take a break for a late lunch (because taehyung complains of being so hungry he could die) consisting of snacks bought in the food court that taehyung scarfs down before going back to complaining about being starving, and ice cream bought from the vender near the entrance. yoongi can see taehyung eyeing his snacks out of the corner of his eye and he can’t help a chuckle.
“i swear to god, tae, all you care about is food.”
“that’s not true!” taehyung sputters indignantly. “i care about a lot of things! like cats, and puppies, and armys, and going for walks, and that feeling i get in my chest when i’m standing on stage!” the younger boy goes down an unnecessarily long list of likes and yoongi thinks he may have just bit off more than he can chew, at least figuratively.
he does the only thing he can think of to get taehyung to stop talking; last piece of his snack in his mouth, he leans over and catches taehyung mid sentence. it’s a quick peck, taehyung’s lips feeling warm and soft under yoongi’s own. that’s all it takes to transfer the snack to taehyung’s mouth and the blond boy is successfully silenced, a bright shade of pink now coloring his face.
he mulls it over, chews slowly and nods to himself. “your snack was definitely better than mine.” he grumbles and yoongi just laughs.

yoongi comes back from his office job late, droops his suit jacket over the back of the chair in front of taehyung’s desk and slides onto their shared bed, face pressed heavily into his pillow. taehyung had watched him make his way from the front door into their bedroom and followed the older boy, and now he approaches and massages comforting circles into yoongi’s back. “long day?” he asks softly.
yoongi lets out a grunt. “too long,” he says, his voice muffled by the pillow. “i’m so glad i have tomorrow off because this week has just been so hectic i hardly know how i’m surviving.”
“well, i’m sure glad you are,” taehyung says. “life would be so much more dull without my yoongi here with me.” yoongi lets out a snort and sits up again, allows taehyung to work his fingers over the buttons of yoongi’s white button-up until the shirt is dropped carelessly onto the floor and taehyung’s hands are once again rubbing in gentle motions against the smooth skin of yoongi’s back.
“you really know how to relax me,” yoongi sighs, almost purring when taehyung moves around so that he can sit down in yoongi’s lap, still massaging his back but also leaning forward and nipping lightly at yoongi’s bottom lip. they kiss sensually, taehyung’s hands roaming all over yoongi’s chest and back and yoongi moaning into taehyung’s mouth.
that is, until taehyung feels a sudden weight on his lap and pink paws appear pressed against yoongi’s chest, as well as a furry head shoving its way in between their mouths, and taehyung can’t help laughing while yoongi shakes his head, a smile pulling on his lips.
“come on, suga,” he mutters, reaching up and scratching behind black ears, earning a loud meow in response. “you always have to interrupt at all the wrong times, don’t you…” the cat chirps at him, shoves its face lovingly against his chin, and the second taehyung shifts so that he can stand up again, it usurps yoongi’s lap and begins purring obnoxiously.
“suga seems to like you a lot,” taehyung says, chuckling as yoongi gives him a sheepish grin. “we’ve only had him for a month but i swear that cat never leaves your side. are all cats like this with you?”
yoongi nods. “my parents always liked cats. we had a lot when i was growing up and it drove them mad that every cat we owned always liked me best. they slept in my room, only accepted food when i was feeding them, and always wanted me to pet them. i think my parents must have been quite jealous,” he shrugs and brushes fingers through suga’s dark fur. “i guess you can call me a real cat person, you know?”
taehyung raises an eyebrow. “i find myself somewhat jealous as well, although it also seems like a curse…?” yoongi sighs dramatically.
“you could say that. after all, there’s only one of me and so many cats in the world. how could i ever pet and take care of all of them?” taehyung laughs again. “hey, wait a minute. don’t you work at a cat cafe?” yoongi suddenly asks.
“yeah, i do,” taehyung confirms. “why?”
“well, i don’t have any plans for my day off. why don’t i come visit you and help take care of the cats?”
“if you want to, sure.” taehyung says. upon realizing that this might make it sound like he doesn’t care if yoongi comes or not, he quickly re-words it. “yeah, i’d like that.”
yoongi beams at him. “it’s decided then.” taehyung leans in and pecks yoongi on the lips before he heads back out of their room to finish making dinner.
taehyung doesn’t wake yoongi in the morning while he’s getting up for work, instead lets the older boy sleep in and gets everything ready for him. clean clothes set out, breakfast made and prepared on the table, a note with a map and directions to the cat cafe on the desk. taehyung nods to himself at his handiwork and marvels at the fact that he’d still managed to get ready on time.
he takes the subway to the cafe and arrives early, letting suga out of his carrier and watching as the cat bounds off to play with the other cats. then he checks up on inventory and starts getting the cafe ready for business. his coworker jimin arrives shortly after him and the two of them open together before jimin heads to the back to help the manager and taehyung takes his post at the counter.
yoongi doesn’t show up until the afternoon, wearing the clothes taehyung had set out for him, to his pleasure, and a black beanie over what taehyung assumes must be a quite a bed head. he yawns as he approaches the counter and greets taehyung.
“sleep well, my sleeping beauty?” taehyung asks with a smile and yoongi shrugs. “what’s it like sleeping in until 1pm when you’re so used to waking up at 8am?”
“disorienting,” yoongi replies, scratching his head and yawning again. “i kinda thought i woke up too early because the curtains were closed but then i looked at the clock. thanks for breakfast, by the way.”
“of course,” taehyung says. “did you find your way here ok? didn’t get lost or anything?” he knows yoongi’s sense of direction isn’t the greatest so he’d been worried that even his incredibly detailed directions on how to get to the cafe wouldn’t be enough. but yoongi shakes his head and taehyung is relieved.
“not at all. your directions were really easy to follow.” he gives taehyung a shy, grateful smile and taehyung feels a fluttering sensation in his stomach.
“taehyung! seokjin hyung wants you to feed the cats now,” jimin’s voice suddenly sounds right behind taehyung, causing him to jump in surprise and yoongi starts laughing. taehyung huffs, his cheeks turning pink as he whirls around to glare at his coworker. jimin grins at him. “sorry for startling you.” he then notices yoongi standing behind the counter and a spark of realization flashes across his face. “ah! is this the boyfriend you’ve been telling me about? min yoongi, or whatever his name is?”
“yah!” yoongi raises an eyebrow and taehyung blushes even brighter as he herds jimin toward the back of the store again. “mind your own business, ok?” jimin just grins even wider and taehyung hears yoongi laughing again. he’s definitely going to have to remind himself to beat jimin up in the alley behind the cafe later. “just go back to cleaning cages.”
jimin holds up his hands in defeat. “alright, i’m going!” but he doesn’t waste the opportunity to add in a final, “don’t have too much fun with your boyfriend though. we don’t want to scare away other customers~” and he has to dodge the punches taehyung throws at him before disappearing into the back again.
when taehyung returns to the front of the store, yoongi nods after his coworker. “was that jimin?”
“yeah, sorry about him. he’s a little, er, too friendly.” taehyung reaches under the counter and pulls up a few cans of cat food. he walks around to the other side and heads over to the feeding area where cat bowls are lined up, and yoongi follows behind him.
“i thought he seemed nice,” yoongi says. he approaches and gestures a hand for the cat food. “can i?” taehyung quickly obliges him.
“go ahead.” yoongi begins putting food in bowls and at the sound of the bowls moving around, one of the cafe cats, hope, comes wandering over immediately. as she gets closer and catches sight of yoongi, the food goes completely ignored and she’s instead rubbing her face along his legs and purring loudly.
“aren’t you a sweetie?” yoongi coos, handing back the cans of food to taehyung and then scratching hope behind her ears. the cat meows at him and purrs louder. as taehyung finishes up filling the food bowls and begins to head back to the counter, the other cafe cats all approach the feeding area, although they seem far more interested in yoongi than in their food. in a matter of seconds, they’re surrounding the older boy, all meowing and squeaking and purring for his attention. yoongi’s expression had started out relaxed but now he’s looking overwhelmed, if not panicked, especially as the cats begin trying to climb into his lap and paw at his chest.
“taehyung…” yoongi says, stumbling backward onto the floor. the cats swarm around him. “taehyung, please…” one successfully manages to knock yoongi over and it doesn’t take long for the cats to pile on top of him until all that remains visible are his legs and feet. taehyung watches in complete amusement.
“taehyung,” comes the muffled voice. “save me…”
“you did this to yourself,” taehyung points out, shaking his head with a smirk before going back to his counter post. yep, definitely a cat person, he thinks.
