They were untrained, unlicensed "midwives" that had no basis to believe that they were prepared to act in that capacity. Due to their lack of training, they did not recognized the symptoms of excessive blood loss, nor, apparently, did they know how to treat it and it cost a woman her life.

I guess it's stories like this that make people fearful to use midwives.
