Can someone PLEASE tell me why DVDs come with an extra cardboard case, out of which you have to slide the ACTUAL DVD case?  The two are absolutely identical in all ways, front and back, except that one is paperboard and the other is plastic.

Probably because it costs them almost nothing, but people seem to equate packaging redundancy with product quality.

at suncoast when I worked there in college, we were told it was in part a theft deterrent. We had alot of theives who would use razor blades concealed inbetween their fingers to spine along spine seam to pop open discreetly and slide disc out...ones with cardboard covered seam to make it less easy and it wasnt easy to slice thru all that as easily and sneakily, if it were just plastic wrap and tape stuff.
