Personally what I would do to avoid the dilemma of should I charge or not, is I'd just tell them that too many people are asking now and you just don't have enough time and it's not fair to only help a few people...so they need to go to the Writing Center. I'm sure you have one, both my undergrad and grad have them. And those people just sit there doing nothing but waiting for people to help. Just a suggestion anyway.

our writing center really REALLY sucks... or so i hear. i've never been down there. but this is true... plus if they go to the writing center and some of the big glaring stuff gets corrected then i CAN ethically just correct grammer and punctuation and stuff. maybe the writing center can just help them make sense.

I ran across the same problem last year in my english comp classes, what I did to make sure that they were not just taking my corrections and turning the paper in was to ask questions, like "what do you mean?" "can you make this clearer?" or "is there a better way to organize this?" that way they really had to think about it before they fixed it. Also, charging is not a bad idea, but I would start by saying that you really do not have time and that they are taking up your time that you could be using to tutor else where and get paid for it, then see what they say ;). I haven't heard that the writing center sucks, on the contrary, I have been told that they do help with some, besides, it can't hurt to get help there. Suggest that your girls go there first.
