A Simple Question...

Aug 30, 2005 19:46

I was just asked a yes or no question. I was to answer it honestly, but give no further explaination. The answer was hurtful to the person who asked, and they no longer want to speak to me.

While the answer was strictly true, I would have liked to explain further.

I am sorry.

People who want black and white answers probably don't deserve an explanation anyway. That sounds harsh, but if they have so little consideration of you (meaning, they don't want to hear what you have to say and are merely concerned with answering their own question) then you don't need to spend your energy. Your explanation is just as much about you is it is about them. People should realize that and be nice and listen.

Now, why would you choose to answer this person honestly when you must have known they would react in such a ridiculous manner? This person had to suspect the answer would be unsavory, or else why ask? And if they suspected it, then they were looking for an excuse to punish you.

Obviously you are sad, but I suspect you are better off without the manipulative rhetoric.

Deep breath and
release
