Is this something they'd say about an African American? This feels a little problematic to me. Anyone else bothered?

My speculation is this would be an example of "white gaze" in writing. If you're not familiar with the notion of "male gaze" in fiction, I can't explain it worth crap, but the Internet can. And then my first sentence should make more sense.
