The Great Rekindling

Having a course in philosophy this year will probably give this journal o' mine a great boost in activity. If not updating with some sort of revolutionary idea generated either by that class or my own thoughts, I'd likely update with a criticism on the philosophy and beliefs of someone who I studied in class. There have been many philosophers or ( Read more... )

"Nothing can come from reason. Reason requires a basis for it to perform correctly, though with no certain truth out there reason can not have a basis, ruling it illogical."

I disagree totally. Just because society as a whole hasn't decided on whether there's a certain truth out there doesn't mean individuals can decide on certain truths they hold so dearly to themselves.

PS: We just read Socrates Cafe in AP English, and I've made no phiolosophy updates becuase I have no time. ;)

Individuals don't hold truths; individuals hold beliefs. It is impossible to know that one knows the truth, and as such, no truth can be certain.

To some people, they can't be certain.

But there are some things that humans I can regard as a truth because I designated it as a truth. Call it a belief, but I still think what I put into myself to make my life meaningful - the existentialist philosophy - is held true to me as an individual whether it's technically a belief or not.

Cody is right, of course according to Moral Relativism there are no absolute truths, but you can have "reason" come from a few basic assume truths, though it is an arbitrary assumption. This is an important distinction, actually, since often people's actions don't correspond to their set of assumptions, i.e. their actions contradict. This is of no absolute importance, but it allows you to say in some form "your actions contradict", which almost everyone seems to think intuitively is very very bad.

"All I will say is "live as you wish to live, but don't expect me to play along." I have given up preaching in the name of anti-'s."

Wait until you pay taxes.
