Emily's exercise of the day:

Alright... let's say you're teaching a highschool level art class,
and a student comes up to you and asks

"What exactly is art?"

"Am I an artist?"

"Are the projects that I construct in your class actually ArtHow would you answer these questions ( Read more... )

art is undefinable. it makes my head spin trying to come up with one definition. art can be almost everything if you say it is.
(I plan on having a debate on this topic)

yes, almost everyone is, but not neccessarily good artists though. but I think you have a lot of strong qualities in your work, like....

of course!

since i dont plan on ever being in a non-art class, im not usre they would change at all.
In elementary, I think I would just get straight to the point -"You are a great artist!" "Art is many things that people create!"

Hey, that's a really lovely icon. I also like the background image on your livejournal. Tell me where they both come from!

That's the topic of my first lecture for the 1030 that I teach. I could send you my powerpoint (or put it on that external hard drive that I am giving you) if it would help. I also asked the students to turn in a 300 word essay on what they think art is, after the lecture. I also had them watch an episode of Art Beat (which I have as an mp3 file and could put on the disk too if you want) and then to discuss in small groups what they think art is and how that related or didn't relate to the videot. Finally, in their first project paper, I asked them to evaluate two paintings in light of their own definition of art. Some of them got it and really did what I asked. Others seemed unable to see how their definition of art largely predetermined their evaluation of the paintings. Especially when they were dealing with nonrepresentational art. There many of them would just react to it without seeing how their definition of art made it all but impossible for them to appreciate what they were looking at ( ... )

In my opinion, you are only an artist if you have had at least six or so years of art school. If a child made me a self portrait of herself, was very proud of it, and asked me if she was an artist, I would say "hell no, kid."
