Literature Week 10: Under MilkWood

This week i had a look at the play for voices: UNDER MILK WOOD
First of all this play was just hard to read, it was all over the place and confusing.
In the beginning i could'nt really see how this could be performed as a drama piece.
There were no stage directions, pauses, chapters, scenes or any scene changes. I found it very challenging.
During the tutorial we listened to the actual radio broadcasting of the play. What i realised from this was that it was completely different to what i had imagined when i had read the book. I could see why this was a "Play for voices". Voices and the tones would have to be very unique to portray each of the characters. I was really suprised with the number of characters, it was so hard to keep up. Unfortunately i still do not really understand what this play is about as it just jumps around from here to there.
What i know from reading this play is that there is a mysterious narrator that invites the reader or listener to join him on a journey of the dreams and lives of this small town. Someone pointed out in the lecture that the narrator was almost like social commentation. Whilst reading this play it kind of reminded me of reading T.S Eliot's poems like 'The Hollow Men'. Once again while reading this play it felt like little voice muttering in my head in a dream like state.
Overall, i thought that the characters were hilarious, especially the way they were portrayed by the playwright. The characters all have a unique tone, some taunting, teasing, mocking etc. Truly this was an interesting and exciting drama to have witnessed! and it was great to have an opportunity to perform !

I just found the BBC version that we had listened to during the lecture and i thought that i would post it up here and share! Enjoy!
