Summary: Castiel remembers Sam's fondness of sunflowers on a special day.
Castiel learned a long time ago that Sam liked the simple things. When Dean used to drive them across the country all cramped up in the Impala Sam would always seem to relax at the sight of sun flowers.
Sam tried to explain it to Castiel once, but he didn’t understand it then. Why a flower could remind Sam of how the world could still be beautiful when it in fact it wasn’t just confused him, but now he understood what Sam was trying to say.
The little bit of the earth’s beauty made everything they were doing worth fighting for and Castiel could relate to that now. Castiel would do anything to get one of Sam’s smiles or to hear the hunter laugh. That was heaven to him.
So Castiel found fresh sun flowers and placed them in a vase, ready to face whatever teasing it might get him, but it was the day Sam told him he loved him. It was something to be remembered.
“Cas?” Sam rubbed a sleepy hand over his eyes and then through his hair. “What are you doing up this early?”
“Uh,” Castiel gave a sheepish smile and pointed towards the flowers. “Trying to surprise you.”
Sam padded across the wooden floor and into the dining room to look at the flowers. ‘They’re perfect.”
“You always liked sun flowers.”
“They are my favorite,” Sam blushed at admitting that fact out loud. “There’s just something about them.”
“I always noticed you liked them.” Castiel looked up and met Sam’s gaze. “You told me you loved me this day.”
Sam’s lips stretched into a wide smile before wrapping his arms around Castiel’s neck, hid nose brushing against Castiel’s. “So it is.”
Castiel’s breath fanned out across Sam’s lips. “I love you too, you know this right?”
“I kinda figured it out by now.” Sam murmured, bringing his hands up to cup Castiel’s jaw and angled it just right before he slanted his lips over the angel’s and licked his way into that blissful slice of heaven he had right at his finger tips.
