Title: Nightmares
Author: youaredriving aka Scarletsptember
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Sam + Dean
Summary: He doesn't want Dean to know he knows - but hell isn't something you can just get over. No matter how long you've been topside.

Sam knows his brother better than he knows himself. It didn’t come from living out of each others pockets when they were younger. If anything it came from the way they learned from each other.
When Dean pretends like he’s fine, Sam already knows that he isn’t. He sees the way his eyes shift at the slightest of sounds. It’s as if his body was poised for the worst to come careening around the corner of him. He saw the way Dean would close his eyes longer than a blink, the rise of his chest as he calmed his breathing. It wasn’t something someone other than Sam would notice. Hell their own dad probably wouldn’t have noticed if he were still around.
It wasn’t the daylight hours that were the worst. It was night time. Dean’s shoulders would tense up, his muscles wound up so tight even the hottest of showers couldn’t help. Dean would curl onto his side and stare at the empty wall with wide eyes until sleep finally claimed him.
Sleep wasn’t safe. It was a nightmare waiting to sink it’s claws into Dean. Sam could hear the moment Dean was back in hell. The soft whimpers tore at his chest, leaving him aching and wishing there was some way he could help his brother. The whimpers would change into mumbled out words. Sam never understood them until recently. He could hear his name over and over again. So he did the only thing he could think of. The only thing he wanted to do.
Sam would slip between the sheets of Dean’s bed and wrapped himself tightly against Dean. It didn’t take long for the muscles in Dean’s shoulders to relax into Sam’s hold. He’s breathing slowed to the rhythm of a resting man. His panicked mutterings turned into soft sleepy words that didn’t make any sense to Sam. It didn’t matter that he didn’t know the calm dreams of his brother. Dean didn’t need to be protected from those. No, he deserved to reveal in those moments.
As soon as the sky began to blush with first light Sam would slip from Dean’s bed and into his own. He’d doze off with the sight of Dean spread out in his bed with soft snores as the only accompanying sound.
He’d wake up with a yawn while Dean yammered on about the case. In the car he’d fall into a light doze with a book on his lap while Dean hummed to the music filtering through the Impala.
