They made rules for themselves, quiet promises shaken on in the cool shade of Cassie's barn. It's to keep them good, to make them stay on the straight and narrow, because even then they knew that this was the kind of thing no one made it through in one piece, and morality was no exception.
Good men don't need rules, she heard someone say once, and isn't it true now, when she has to keep pushing instincts (kill tear danger blood death) to the back of her mind, even when she has ten fingers and ten toes and long blonde hair. If she were good, she wouldn't have to keep telling herself to stand down, to stay back and keep quiet and not talk to people like they're all dirty slugs even when they are. If she were good she wouldn't have to flex long fingers and hide them in her pockets to stop herself from punching out people who get in her way or take the last cardigan in her size before she gets there
