This is very powerful. I love the way you have reached into their heads and come up with this scenario. It seems entirely plausible to me and also consistent with the book sources. I like it very, very much. Enhances the original for me. Thanks so much for writing this and sharing it.

It is seriously mine now also. I just have to remember where I first saw it and credit it you if I ever use it in a story!! I love it.

This gave me the chills. Poor Gahrazel! Very authentic, strongly realized characterization. It's a wonderful story.

Gahrazel was one of the most tragic figures in the books. I really like the way you've handled him here, it feels plausible and actually adds to the sense of tragedy in his character. And the irony: he wants to rebel against the strict ouana/soume roles in Varrish society, which pretty much exactly mirror the strict male/female roles in human society that the Wreaththu were trampling all over.

The mention of how Gahrazel would be embarrassed to explain his acceptance of Terzian's proposal to Swift added a bit of... I don't want to say humor, but yeah, I couldn't imagine that conversation would have been anything other than horribly awkward.

Thank you! Gahrazel just breaks my heart everytime I think of him. The whole thing where Swift betrayed his trust rather spectacularly and then ended up doing pretty well exactly what Gahrazel was going to do anyway -- going to the Gelaming. Oh, Swift -- I've come to the conclusion that he's not called Swift the Betrayer for nothing -- I love him, but loyalty is not his strong suit.

And yeah, the awkwardness of explaining the whole hosting thing to Swift would have been pretty bad -- I just had to put that in.

Thanks for reading and reviewing!

Why don't they just flee to the wilderness to be free? calgslinger May 1 2012, 08:13:44 UTC
What holds people back from just running and keep running? Better to die trying to find a better life, than sitting still and doing nothing, until you have no options left but to die at someone else's hand!

But it is even true today people are prisoners of their lifestyle, possessions, and daily fears of the unknown.

It's better to die fighting to exist, than passively sitting still, waiting until the unholy couple of fate and death to come knocking at your door! We should all go down with both guns blazing and kicking and screaming to the very end.

Poor Gahrazel and Purah they just waited much to long to get the hell out of there in time! You told a sad tale that complimented the original and sheds some light on their emotions. Always enjoy your stories, please write more... soon!

Thank you for your great thoughts. Yeah, they should have just run while they had the chance. Unfortunately they did not and Gahrazel made the mistake of blabbing his plans. Sadness. Thank you for reading!

Lovely fic! Sad and tragic, and it could really have happened like this. *sighs*
A friend of mine and I have created a new Wraeththu fan forum awhile ago. Would you mind if I posted the link to this story in the fan fic thread there? We've just had a thread about Terzian and Ponclast. Those are always hot topics. *g*
Or you could just join us, too.^^ The more, the merrier! :-) I've spread the link on Facebook and DeviantArt, but I haven't hung around on LiveJournal much lately...
Anyways, if you are interested, just come here:
