personality: Max is something of a walking conundrum, there are a lot of things about her that don’t make sense in contrast to the rest and she prefers it as such. Though it tends to get in the way of her social relationships she enjoys the air of mysteriousness the shrouds her like fog, and while annoying it keeps the people she really does care about at a distance. The people closest to her always have a way of always getting hurt because of what she is and what she does. The scientists that engineered her might say that these emotions are just a cushy suit over a callous exterior but she knows better than that and so do the people she’s learned to call “friend.” The leader of her X5 unit that had named himself Zach said her time spent living with people instead of on a constant move (as they were trained to do in enemy territory) had made her soft. He was sure it had swayed her from the path she was supposed to follow, that it was corrupting who she was and that she was a soldier and not a little girl squatting in an abandoned building in the city. Max has argued that point several times with other people. She might not fit societies norms, and she may not routinely embark in what she was designed for, but she sees herself as a person nonetheless.

Due to her design Max is very intelligent, she has basic knowledge of physics and the laws of numbers, things most people spend their entire lives trying to grasp and she already has down at the age of twenty-one. She’s extremely knowledgeable but never really openly speaks about it. Max has a tendency to use these skills for the benefits of others but never for herself - knowing that it would attract attention to her and that it has in the past. This intelligence is often hidden behind a sharp use of sarcasm dripping off of a cocky tongue. Max speaks in common American slang and lived with people of many different diversities in the slums of what’s left of Seattle, Washington after terrorists set off an electromagnetic pulse over the US in 2019. (The series was filmed in the late nineties to my knowledge so the styles, wardrobe, slang, etc is fairly out of date with what probably would be and all carries a sort of late 80’s early 90’s appeal) But despite the way she words things every so often a phrase or word breaks through her cleverly designed mask and shows that she’s not exactly what she pretends to be.

Max has moments where she’s spunky and eccentric but these are few and far between. She prefers to remain stoic, void of emotions - although she knows that she indeed has them. She’s maternal with her friends and loyal to a fault. She won’t admit this but in certain occasions this is displayed, try though she does to forget it. She always has to be the level headed brave one and as she’s said before, “emotions just botch all of it up.” The stoicism is a facade that Max displays to hide the real longevity of what she's feeling. Unlike some of her siblings she has a high threshold for emotions and understands them intimately; sarcasm and being belligerent is merely how she copes.

Every day of Max’s life is like another day spent looking at things from the eyes of a child. She retained her memories from the X5 barracks and what happened the day her squadron tried to escape and she remembers them in a series of flash backs, other times… more vividly. Her life was very different from that of a normal child so there are things about human nature she understands textually and things she understands based on her own experiences. For example, she’s not sure how to accurately open up and this hinders her friendships and also her relationships. Some people know Max others know X5-452 very few know both and people usually know her by one or the other. Logan, a technological journalist was the only person - aside from Zach that knew both and accepted it. She makes it very hard for others to understand her, let alone welcome her. She's become an island of a person surrounded by a sea of people, she's stand-offish and doesn't welcome just anyone into her life. Most of those that she considers friends have been with her for a very long time and have earned their right to the title.

Max has spent her life learning and understanding her own views, her own sense of virtue and morale and she sticks by it. No one can hinder her from what she believes and she really hates to have to second guess a situation or herself. When it comes to what she wants to do and what she believes, she is stubborn and mule-headed. Nothing can get your point across to her if she's unwilling to accept it. She has to want to hear it and want to believe it for there to be even a slight chance that she’ll drop her guard or recognize what you have to say. People have shown that they can prove her wrong and it’s a very large part of the reason that she’s taken to the normals so well and wants to be among them and one of them.

So far Max has been indifferent, by choice, about the things she comes to face. Nothing is too far out of her realm of beliefs given what she is in essence. Mainly she’s just coping for the first time with true loneliness. She’s distanced herself, she keeps that distance out of the need to protect others. Even though Logan never judged her for what she was and who she is, the behavior is so ingrained into her it's gotten hard to let go. Max glides between going back to being a cynic and “hiding behind that tough ass attitude” in order to get by. She knows that new experiences are good for her and they will improve her mentally, physically, and emotionally. So, despite the cathartic facetiousness she always has the intentions of putting a good foot forward and rolling with the punches.

abilities/powers:

Max was genetically engineered and carried to term by a human woman somewhere at the turn of the 21st century. She was created for a secret government super soldier program called “Manticore,” then located in the mountains of Gillette, Wyoming. As with almost all of Manticore’s soldiers Max has a barcode on her neck (332960073452) She is an X5 model and often referred to as X5-452 by the military personnel that follow(ed) her. Max Guevara being the name that she gave to herself.

Although Max has all of the skills seen below she is not apt to use any of them unless she absolutely has to. She doesn’t like to be known as anything but Max which has become a sort of alter-ego to her. Like Clark Kent and Superman. When she does use her vast list of abilities it’s usually surprising and out of the blue.

Biological Abilities, Skills, and Weaknesses.

• Max is lithe like a cat. It is spoken that she has a “dash of feline” DNA and such can climb fences and scale buildings. Her body retains the same flexibility that a cat’s would and despite the height in which she jumps or falls she most always lands on her feet. She’s also much quicker on her feet and has a knack for acrobatics. A downside to this pinch of DNA in her genomic build-up is that much like a cat she goes through heat. It can last from a day to a week depending on if she allows herself to be sated. (this means physically with another person, but she can resist it) It is not necessarily in order to breed just a downside to the perks of what she is.

• Another downside that is often spoken of in the series is that the wrong wires were crossed in her brain. It gives Max a neurological disorder in which she has to take the dietary supplement Topamax in order to get the necessary chemicals she needs. This disorder causes her to have frequent episodes of seizures and without the drug it has been said that she can die.

• Max is capable of holding her breath for five minutes, sometimes more, under water and in concealed spaces. She was trained since birth to do things of that nature and if necessary will jump head first into oceans, lakes, and rivers to make the journey to whatever lies on the other side. She escaped the soldiers chasing her unit by diving into a an iced over lake and waiting beneath the glaze of that for the soldiers to pass.

• Max can see in the dark and has no need for flash lights, car lights, or anything of that sort. It’s sort of like she has night vision built in. Much like an alley cat or a homeless dog she can prowl in the dark without being seen and it makes her aptitude for attack that much more intimidating.

• It is said several times in the series both in her words and the words of roommates, her squadron captain and others that she works with that Max just doesn’t sleep. Though this has been disproved when she is under extreme physical duress (such as dealing with her neurological disorder) or emotional duress, although in that situation it is a mild attempt to close herself off from it.

• As implied by "genetically enhanced" Max is also much stronger than your average human woman and openly makes crude statements about snapping limbs and body parts. She doesn't always follow through with that, but in combat it's clear she's made of a little something more.

Abilities according to wikipedia:
As a result of her genetic makeup and training, Max has the following special abilities:
Enhanced strength, speed, agility, reflexes, durability, stamina and coordination

• Accelerated healing
• Enhanced eyesight, hearing, and night vision
• Enhanced immune system
Eidetic memory
• Very high I.Q.
• Expert martial artist and sharpshooter.
• Specialist in Close Quarters Battle, infiltration and tracking
•Computer proficiency
• Peak athletic condition

Design flaw:
Max also has a design flaw which can leave her virtually helpless: the inability of her brain to create enough serotonin. This condition leads to uncontrollable seizures and complete powerlessness. Of her condition, Max states, "I’m supposed to be a revved-up girl ... truth is, I’m a lemon." Max's powers can be revived through external means: either through the food supplement, tryptophan, or by drinking a glass of milk. In season 2 this no longer became an issue as the government captured her and repaired the faulty genes (this was never expressly stated in the show but it was implied in season 1 that design flaws in the genetic codes of the transgens could be repaired and in the second season after being captured by manticore her serotonin levels were never an issue.)

first person sample:
[Max didn't expect to be dead. That's the last thing she'd be thinking of, but only Manticore had the power to bring her back.] What the hell's going on?! [She knew she shouldn't be demanding things but given her situation and just recently being shot she also didn't care.] I don't remember the base being this lax about it's medical and I sure as heck don't appreciate the gown. [She frowns.] The rest can wait. The technology's nifty but it hasn't been seen in a while and everything is way too suspicious for me. [A pause and she looks directly into the camera.] I want some answers.

third person sample:
In the building Max was squatting in there weren’t a lot of rules. Pay the cop off, keep the place clean, don’t attract attention to yourself and try not to make too much noise. Since the wave had hit the city everything was in ruins, America was now a third world country and things like coffee and the medication she needed to maintain a sense of decency were harder to find than a needle in a hay stack. She had her ways, most of them conning, but she was taught to survive. She was also taught to kill, but hey- what else is new?

Max hadn’t slept at all night before, she’d gotten a creeping feeling all up her back and even though she only got the few sparse trick or treaters of children also squatting in the building it wasn’t enough to make her content. Both her woman’s intuition and her hunter’s instincts were bebopping all over the place so when she showed up to work and got her shit from Jam Pony she started delivering messages dressed in a long sleeved black shirt and cargo pants with a ball cap on front ways to keep her inconspicuous. Just an average ordinary human girl to all spectators and bystanders. Something entirely different to the floating cameras deployed in the sky.

Max dropped off a few packages and by the time she had one last delivery before lunch, took a sneak break and got herself a bottle of flavored water to keep her hydrated. She deserved little perks every now and then, especially when she had the cash to spare.

The last house was a doozy, bigger than what she assumed even needed Jam Pony services. Sort of shady, so she kept her guard up, Max knocked on the door not once but twice, poised her feet for any attack because the places she delivered normally were lower class. This place was huge, and despite looking trashed by the same thing that had leveled the rest of Seattle it was still pretty big and extravagant. Most people wouldn't give an opulent building like this a second thought, but Max didn’t like surprises or anything out of the typical, they set off red lights in her brain.
