Okay, so uh, I'm here to bring you guys crack. It's a random, short drabble I wrote up really quick, so yes.
Under the disdainful gaze of Hyuuga Neji, the paper he held in his hands thought about crumbling into nothingness. His fingers were tense, ready to crush it easily in his fist, and there was a tic in his jaw that complimented his sour expression.
The piece of paper had been subject to many different looks from this man in particular- ranging from mild annoyance and irritation to a withered fury and offense generally accompanied by a glare that threatened to crisp its very edges. A heavy silence had been weighing over the room for several minutes now, and so it was with some relief that he spoke.
“These… are my orders, Hokage-sama?”
Distraction unsuccessful. His eyes never left the paper to look at the person across from him and his tone was low with an icy edge to it. There might even have been a note of disbelief there, but it was unlikely that he was even reading the painstaking calligraphy anymore. No, this was about principle now.
A few feet away, a sigh issued from the other side of the large, oak desk. It was, perhaps, a tad dramatic. Maybe.
“You’re the only one I know that I can entrust with something like this. There isn’t anyone else.”
The Hyuuga’s lip curled, and the paper chose that moment to shake nervously in the spring breeze entering the room from one of the large, open windows.
“I’m honored, Hokage-sama, to be given such an important task. I’m sure you’ve chosen well and that my abilities meet the required criteria in such a way so as to prevent failure where others may have fallen.”
It was, in truth, a rehearsed line with a slight adjustment to fit the circumstance, but the professional tone with which it was usually said was lost in the bitterness. Ah, sarcasm.
“I have every confidence in you.”
The childish smugness in that voice doubled as a dismissal and with a curt nod, Neji turned to leave. The paper- in a subtle act of defiance and rebellion- was dropped, and it fell to the floor gently, shuffling as it settled against the wooden surface in a makeshift sigh of relief.
“Oh, and Neji?”
The ANBU captain froze, but didn’t grace his superior by turning around. His silence answered for him.
“Don’t spill any of it, please. I’m running out of coupons.”
Neither of them could see it, but his expression soured further and the door slammed shut behind him.
