[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Janet Pym (née Van Dyne) // The Wasp
FANDOM: Ultimate Marvel (Earth-1610)
CHRONOLOGY: The end of volume one, after Hank beats the crap out of her for “making him feel small” and sends ants to eat her comatose body while she is still wasp size.

BACKGROUND:
Janet Pym is quite different from her 616 counterpart, who was a spoiled heiress. In Ultimates, Jan is of Asian descent, holds two PhDs (one in molecular biology) and is a mutant by birth. She grew up in a military base in Dusseldor, Germany, and so is moderately fluent in German. She and her husband, Hank Pym, are hired by Nick Fury, who is attempting to create a United States sponsored superhero team, as mutants such as the X-Men and Spiderman are appearing in the Ultimate universe. Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Bruce Banner (who is still trying to unlock the secrets of the Super Soldier formula) are hired and the five of them form the Ultimates.

When the five of them finally manage to stop arguing and work together as a team, S.H.I.E.L.D. finds the frozen body of Captain America in the ocean. He was kept alive by the Super Soldier formula and Bruce’s hopes of scientific breakthrough are renewed, despite the fact that after he trashed New York as the Hulk, he was demoted and humiliated. The public is not all the impressed with the Ultimates and so Bruce Banner decides to test a new Super Soldier Serum on himself, hoping to create a situation that makes the Ultimates necessary and to regain some publicity (and also to show his bitch girlfriend Betty Ross that he was important.) Needless to say, things go wrong, he turns into the Hulk, and destroys more of New York.

Jan’s status as a mutant, at her request, is unknown to the public but is known by her husband and S.H.I.E.L.D (and probably other mutants). Being a mutant has some side effects for Jan such as her occasional need to eat bugs, forming her own larval nests in the middle of the night, and laying egg-like constructs in bed next to her husband that is less than sanitary/delicious smelling. The public thinks that her husband was the one who used science to give her that form and she is more than happy to let them believe it.

It is revealed by Betty Ross that the two were roommates in college (NYU), where her dark past with Hank Pym started. Jan was seen beaten by Hank on two occasions-he had put her head through a door and split the roof of her mouth. She also suffered from severe bulimia (due to personal pressures and abuse from her boyfriend/husband Hank) and Betty noted that she had seen Jan missing chunks of her hair on various occasions.

The rockiest part of Jan and Hank’s marriage came after the anxiety ridden, Prozac popping Hank was defeated by the Hulk and took out his anger, as always, on Jan. He was jealous of her friendship with the ever-so-perfect Captain America and her attempts to be nice to the downtrodden Bruce and slapped her viciously during an argument. For once, Jan fought back against him, which only led to disaster. When she turned into tiny wasp form and started stinging him to defend herself, he put on his ant helmet and sent hundreds of ants after her. The result of this was Jan going into anaphylactic shock, because of the multiple ant stings she received while tiny.

PERSONALITY:

Jan’s biggest personality problem would be self esteem. One wouldn’t know it by looking at her-she is a successful scientist working with some of the best in her field who is always up for some witty and friendly banter between friends. However, she is the type to internalize all of her shame, guilt, and negative feelings. This led to her severe bulimia, a condition known to be the product of the victim wanting to gain control of their lives by controlling what goes in and out of their bodies. As Betty Ross put it: “I don’t think she likes herself very much.”

Her mutant status was hidden from everyone but her husband because she was so ashamed of being insect-like. Because of her low self esteem, Jan allows herself to be abused by her husband (she claimed “the good times made the bad times worth it”) and even allows him to take credit for pretending to create her powers by scientific means when they are working under Bruce Banner at S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Super Soldier Research Facility. The two of them made many scientific breakthroughs because of her mutation and the Pyms were later promoted to head the research and development wing of the government's new superhuman strike force, the Ultimates, with Banner as their deputy and Betty Ross as the program's Director of Communications.

Jan is highly intelligent (having two science PhDs at the age of twenty six) and tends to shy away from the spotlight, preferring to let her husband take all of the glory for their breakthroughs because it makes him happy. She is a private person, only showing a good front to her peers and leaves all personal problems behind closed doors. She is generally friendly towards everyone, even Bruce Banner who is treated with a good deal of contempt from the rest of the Ultimates, sans Tony. Science excites her-she is a dork to the extreme. Her life revolves around her work. She is fearless (and shameless) in battle-she flashed her breasts at the Hulk to distract him, much to the surprise and amusement of Nick Fury. Her humor is caustic and sarcastic but usually without any ill meaning behind it.

Her relationship with her husband is not a complicated one. Although many people wonder why she is with someone so abusive, Jan clearly feels thankful to him for staying with someone like her. Everything she does is to ensure his happiness and success. After almost dying at his hand (and him running away), though, her perception on her marriage is going to be put into perspective, (meaning, wondering how to obtain a divorce in an alternate reality without Hank being present).

CLASS: Hero
SUPERHERO NAME: The Wasp
ALTER EGO: Janet Pym // Scientist
POWER: Janet can shrink to the size of an insect but a natural neurological reflex prevents her from shrinking beyond the limits of her body's endurance. As she shrinks, she grows wings reminiscent of an insect that enables her to fly. When she is in “wasp form”, she can discharge stings of bioelectric energy.
