well yeah, even tho they are favorites, (all 81 "chapters") I have many other written sources and like you mention actual experience is the deal. The 3 chapters were just a quick easy thing to share in an LJ comment.btw It's hard to find a decent translation, lots of bogus ones, very few that catch it nicely. just words, definitely flawed but still interesting.
Yea, anytime something has to be translated it tends to miss the original mark in some way. That's the gift & blessing that a great translator contributes to the world- that they translate it has true and effectivley as possible. When one thinks about it, there are all kinds of cotributing factors. Like the culture and thus language associated with it. I have found to really study anyhting, you have to research the culture and time period it was in. For me that has cleared up a lot of misunderstanding or confusment. By the way, if you now a good translation that you feel is the most accurate, please let me know about the author, publisher and all that jaz. I'd love to take a look at it.
This mostly my ancestral tao: http://www.textfiles.com/stories/tao3.dos my copy is a set of hardcopy I photocopied from a book a long time ago. Next time you're around we should put together a hike
( ... )
I WOULD LOVE THAT!!..the hike I mean :) I will be going on another walk-about at the end of April. My ending destination is the northwest. Specifically seattle & olympic pennisula area. If you want I can send you post cards from along my journey? When I get in the area, around mid August, i will give you a call you contact you in some way. We can then arrange the details from there dear friend. We should camp over night if you are up for it. My wilderness living skills are pretty good. I can make a fire for us with my bow drill and some tinder I find along our hike:) I Look forward to the day- whatever it may bring:)
well, it is an inspiring piece, but i found one little flaw at the beginging. the point to give up book-learning. books were written to enlighten us with the experience of those who have gone before us, or those who are just more experienced. HOWEVER!!! i think one who lives and bases everything he lives for on books instead of learning the delicate balance of life and ACTUAL experience, is setting him/herself up for a drastic failiar. on top of that, if you read, you are able to speak in a more literate fashion than if you did not. so book learning has its perks. after all.... tao te ching is a book after all.... ^_______^ good stuff all in all though....
