Okay, I got a copy of this just now (comics book shop in Georgetown! Who knew?) and totally read it on the way home. More details (and spoilers) under the cut, but bottom line: very fun, completely in-character, and a little fanservice on the side.
The writing, of course. Plenty of little hilarious asides. "Buddhists don't have a heaven."
The moral ambiguity of everyone. I love the guy at the beginning getting all upset for Mal trying to play him when he, in fact, was trying to play Mal.
Really, just the joy of seeing everyone. So fun. And next week looks to be just as much awesome.
Okay, some of the art style is a little ... uneven? Maybe I'm just not used to comics, but the near-photorealism of the cover, combined with the more sketched-out faces inside, was a little disjointed. Plus, you can tell they used the actor's faces as models for some of the characters and not the others, and it's a little disconcerting to be like "wait, that's Wash?"
Also, personal nitpick: is Ephraim supposed to be an old client of Inara's? Doesn't she ever get any new ones? If he's an old client, I'd think he'd have told her about his job by now.
Also, why in the scene of them in bed does her sheet make it look like she's wearing a dress? I get that she has to be covered up, but it looks completely unnatural.
INARA THINKS ABOUT MAL WHEN SHE HAS SEX. I don't think I need to explain that one.
(On a similar note, Mal in a T-shirt is also pretty hot. I completely blame my recent rewatch of West Wing for my noticing this.)
Wash and Kaylee being friends! And him giving her romantic advice!
"The hero of Canton ... he's real!"
