The Magic That Saves

Asuma's full backstory has yet to be explored, but thanks to a flashback, this much can be surmised:

He attended a magical academy at a young age and was released to find potential magic users at a young age. Since his magic causes him to age every time he uses it, he was likely even younger than he appeared at the time (my guesstimate is 14~16 based on physical appearance). After saving a girl in an abusive household, he aged up about three years, and by the time you see him in the main series he has become the headmaster of the Royal Kamisaid Magic Academy. This takes place about 6 years after saving the girl at the most, judging by the girl's growth.

In a little more detail, Asuma has spent a good deal of his short life saving people through his magic, sacrificing his own time for them. When sent as a scout for magical talent, he would do simple sleight of hand tricks for children to pass the time. It was during one of these instances when he was approached by a young girl who asked if she had the talent for magic. He agreed to test her for the power through a hug - a test which she ultimately failed, but also convinced him she would be good with children. Which he told her, much to her embarrassment.

Out of curiosity, he investigated her background to see just why she would be so desperate to have magic at such a young age. He quickly found out about her circumstances, which he revealed when she caught him faking magic in a performance for kids the next day. He called her out for wanting magic to hurt people, only for her to insist she wanted to use her magic to help. However, due to her situation, she could hardly help herself, much less others. After leaving him in angry tears, he decided to follow her and save her if he could.

As expected, her adoptive father soon geared up to give the child a beating. Asuma stepped in then, and lent her the strength to protect herself: he caused the earth itself to rise up, creating a protective wall between the two. It was then that the girl introduced herself as Misaki and pledged to help him by learning all types of magic, even if she couldn't use it herself. Unable to say no, he took her on.

The next day they met at a train station, and Misaki realized the extent of his sacrifice to use spells. He had aged about three years since she had seen him last, and she correctly guessed the cause of it.

The two would remain together even as Asuma went on to become the headmaster of the Royal Kamisaid Magic Academy, with Misaki as his ever faithful (if irritable) assistant. He eventually takes a young girl named Hibiki on as a teacher, recognizing her ability to bring out the best in even the worst of people, and possibly more... since he also happens to be an ambiguous guy when he really wants to be.
